thomas meyerhoffer: changing the shape of modern surfing

since 2004 thomas meyerhoffer has been developing a new kind of surfboard which is now considered by some as the most radical leap in surfboard design in the last 50 years. the 'meyerhoffer' board is shaped like an hourglass to emphasize noseriding and tailriding for recreational surfers. it is supposed to be a longboard that rides like quicker more manoeuvrable shortboard.

thomas meyerhoffer describes his design:

the 'meyerhoffer' was launched globally in may 2009 you can read more about the design in this new york times article and over at global surf industries.

thomas meyerhoffer is a swedish designer now based in california. he has developed pieces for companies such as apple, cappellini, porsche, and sony ericsson among others. more information can be found on his website.

nice work but his website is near unreadable

i would never ride that.
hideous.
stranga   07.20.09
hi i like your project, im industrial designer, i live in mexico and i love the suf and puerto escondido, the best place with best waves! really i wish a good accepattion of your proyect, its fantastic!!
congratulations!!
navadesign.co mexico   07.20.09
nice but need forms grapics
comecoco   07.20.09
Its been done years ago by Mr Tom Morey in the US and by Brett Curtis in Australia. Designers need to acknowledge the real innovators when they are copying others work.
surffoils   07.20.09
real surfers need real old style boards. in the kingdom of waves is no acceptance for this blablabla of forms. moreover as surffoils stated: It has been done before .... to speak
right from my heart: boring stuff. if you like to know how stuff will be done take a look at the silver surfboard of marc newson.
sans curry   07.23.09
This is appauling. He would never last at Cypresses or even Whistler with that. He needs to smarten up and start thinking about industrial designing and not surf riding.
Giancarlo Morenzo   07.24.09
It looks like a type of board the rich kid would show up with and get laughed off the beach. Like that stupid rocking skateboard thing. I don't know any surfers who would ride that thing.
Pipes n' Lines   07.24.09
It looks like a half sheathed c*ck with a rubber on it.
HOIST   07.24.09
Giancarlo, I don't see waves at Whistler and Cypress.. but I think they could build like a wave park there... they just need a heating system that can convert the snow into water, then something to make waves.. then you could use it there. Am I smart or what!
hugh jardon   07.24.09
Fuck sweedish wannabe surfers and his "revolutionary new form giving crap" hopefully no one will buy that ridiculously gay looking board. bad mood today, sorry.
Mx RAM   07.24.09
Hugh good point. Awesome - a wave pool inside Whistler!! But I just had amazing idea of what you filled the half pipe with water instead? How sick for that is?!! It would save money and be good on environment. OMG that is such a cool idea. You could snowboard transition to surfing and back out. Don't tell anyone it's my idea and I have to think about it more.
Giancarlo Morenzo   07.24.09
Obviously it's hard for most surfers to accept something new and different -- or even consider giving it a try without criticizing it first.

Maybe if thomas meyerhoffer was a big-name surfer his stab at innovation would gain more immediate acceptance. It's a whole lot easier to put it down than consider that it might be innovative.

Didn't they do something like this with skis?
Bill Grote   07.24.09
Bill - yes they did. But skis are gay to begin with. Here he is taking something like surfing, a pure and natural sport and ruining it by trying to improve on what is already perfect. What will he improve the ocean next because it's not good enough!! I think what you wrote is wrong.
HOIST   07.24.09
Hoist, I disagree.. you can improve the ocean. There are many ways to make it better to surf.. I think they need let off some big explosions so they get big tidal waves , would be great for surfing. Bill I am a surfer and I want something innovative and different. Who do you think I am.. an old man. I am not an old man! I am a reasonably young man.. well I don't maybe not that young but not childlike. You sound like an old man and can't move on to something new.
Hugh Jardon   07.24.09
I love it.
If only because it pisses off the self proclaimed surf "experts". So much for embracing someone's "freedom".
By limiting the design of surfboards, especially with bigotry laced criticisms, you become part of that to rebel against. You want more of the same? Your name tag says: "Wannabe".
youcan'thandlethetruth   07.25.09
looks fascinating and obviously, if you haven't ridden one, you are in no position to judge it. anyone who thinks surfing is incapable of further innovation lives under a rock. advances in surf design and technology create more opportunities to surf.
cbrider   07.25.09
You can't use explosions to get rideable waves, Hugh Jardon. That online video was a hoax. The physics of waves don't come from abrupt explosions. Explosions would only kill wild life, and knock out anyone in the water near it.
Dozer   07.27.09
i think the graphics are genius.
kingmu   07.27.09
does it really work???im not a huge fan of surfing but this comes to change everything i think...
natush09   07.29.09
I doubt this would work explosions or no explosions. You people who don't surf can go buy these but the rest of the surf community will be riding giants whether they're caused by explosions or not!! Toes to the nose don't be close minded fools!
HOIST   07.29.09
Crap.
MiniMolly   08.06.09
That's a crazy looking board all right. I think the makers should show up at a beach with a few boards and let surfers have a go! Word of mouth will make or break this board.
kingslndflyr   08.06.09
I think they'd get their *asses kicked right off the beach for those. They shouldn't try and make waves the surf community likes their boards
MiniMolly   08.06.09
Hey, the real problem of all of this is surfing. I don't really get why people are still surfing. There's so much more funny sports such as kite surfing or even snowboarding. Why should you have to swimm 15 min for 5 mins of ride. Or maybe surfers are just lazy swimmers who want to come back to the beach faster so they can show they blond hairs and smoke their fake joint with silicon past-hugly girls.
But i have to say i never tried surfing so i should not say anything about. Still, you somke fake joints.
Francis   08.10.09
Surfers are a conservative bunch. I'm making one because it looks fun. I like fun. Y'all remember fun right? Before you got "good" and started fighting for waves?
