timothy liles: less chair chairs

designer timothy liles designed this series of chairs with the aim of reducing them to their bare minimum.
the pieces are built using maple wood and traditional joinery employed in the simplest form possible.
both chairs have three legs stabilized with two cross braces. the high back chair has a three rung backrest
while the low back chair has only two. each piece is essential to the structure of the design. the lightness
of the maple wood matches the chairs design aesthetic.

i think they look shitty
I also don't think this is a forum for attacking people's weight issues.
I think the chairs are very elegant and succinct. They would look great in any modernist home.
Great job. Keep it up!
p.s.: I am still rocking the pair of Chucks All Stars you designed back in 2005.
tim, these are beautiful. nice work.
it always amazes me that people with such bad taste read this blog and make silly comments.
criticism is easier than creation
Quite an assumption that nobody on here is creating. I thought the comment section was to contribute your opinions etc.. so what - if they're not all praises and positive then they're not valid? Grow up. I design everyday.
This chair was just not a very strong design design, but I'm sure he does other killer stuff.
Nice chair design.
BTW your website does not work in PC IE 7.
I don't think the criticisms of the 3 legs and slender structure are valid. As long as you're not an overweight drunkard the chairs should function just fine. Maybe a darker wood would lend the design a little more gravitas and reassure potential sitters.
I've also recklessly sacrificed a leg in one of my chair designs... Radar Chair
you mustn't be chubby to sit on the chair
you mustn't be drunk to sit on the chair
you must keep both feet on the floor etc..
chair must be dark brown to calm down frightened sitters
ergo: a design for design's sake.
that makes it a shit chair for idiots that are not even
drunk.
Hey Greenslade, i almost flipped my five legged chair laughing about the Radar Chair
Thanks for taking the time to look at my Radar Chair design. Would you mind explaining why you found it so laughable. I'm certainly a novice at furniture design, so any feedback would be appreciated.
it in the context of liles' pile of toothpicks, being
just the opposite in both looks and construction.
you are not really backing him.
and, if you mind, I don't find the radar innovative or
elegant by any means. the basic formal idea is ok, but
it lacks refinement in shape. it looks like a chair
i would expect in a dentist waiting room in poland.
just my two cents
Thanks for the feedback. I thought it was obvious that I only posted my Radar design in support of 3 legged chairs in general, regardless of specific construction methods or aesthetics. But anyway, I was very much 'backing' timothy's actual design, as I clearly stated in the main part of my comment.
Your criticisms of both Timothy's and my chair appear to be somewhat contradictory. Are there any contemporary chair designs that you regard as totally satisfactory?
BTW if there are any Polish furniture manufacturers out there looking to market to dentists, then please, do get in touch.
This 3 legged chair looks like it was built by a 3 fingered woodworker. BTW that's the good news. It looks bad...as far as functionality I agree with ".. 08.09.09", very unstable and likely to come loose then become dangerous before long.
Why not just put a shovel in the ground and sit your *ss on that..probably just as comfortable.
@ Dr. Goodluck and associates...
Google images 3 legged chair and behold your ignorance.
Are you on medication for delusions? Try reading what you write. My suggestion to google '3 legged chair' was obviously a response specifically to your comment...
"The 3 legged chair = bad idea. Tried before never worked."
So, quite clearly, you were not discussing only this chair when you commented on 3 legged chairs in general. There's always one person who can't stick by their comments. Take your self righteous hypocrisy somewhere else thank you.
