timothy liles: less chair chairs

timothy liles: less chair chairs

designer timothy liles designed this series of chairs with the aim of reducing them to their bare minimum.
the pieces are built using maple wood and traditional joinery employed in the simplest form possible.
both chairs have three legs stabilized with two cross braces. the high back chair has a three rung backrest
while the low back chair has only two. each piece is essential to the structure of the design. the lightness
of the maple wood matches the chairs’ design aesthetic.

What a stupid thing! I would snap that in 5 pieces if I sat on that. I hate it!
Luenzo   08.06.09
less brain chairs
Faskingwhy   08.06.09
Why don't you shed a bit of weight Luenzo? Your weight is obviously not compatable with elegance.
The Big Black & White Zebra   08.06.09
applied common sense has made us build chairs with four legs for good. no need to sacrifice one for "elegance"
i think they look shitty
Faskingwhy   08.06.09
I agree. If I wanted a broken looking piece of Balsa wood looking thing I'd go down in my grandmother's basement and pull one out.

I also don't think this is a forum for attacking people's weight issues.
Luenzo   08.07.09
hahaha you guys cute, and chairs shitty~
uhaan   08.07.09
Hey timothy! You are not philippe starck!!
jonathan   08.07.09
Don't pay attention to these simpletons Tim.

I think the chairs are very elegant and succinct. They would look great in any modernist home.

Great job. Keep it up!

p.s.: I am still rocking the pair of Chucks All Stars you designed back in 2005.
H.Wai   08.07.09
Smootch smootch smootch...oooh Tim I have your chucks. Kine nyen bie n
Farstour   08.07.09
Maybe too little, but surdenly not too much. I donīt think you made less chair - itīs just cut down to the essential.
lyndby   08.07.09
I love them, I don't understand why everybody hates them. Maple wood and traditional joinery employed in the simplest form possible. beautifull idea.
tomgustin   08.07.09
Please put them on your online shop!

I like the chairs
oliver   08.07.09
great look, nice feel, just as good or better as any chair on the market
moderndesign2120   08.07.09
The most uncomfortable looking chair ever made.
Chair Authority   08.07.09
Yes. I agree.
Intl. Asspain Institute   08.07.09
uncomfortable LOOKING? wtf?

tim, these are beautiful. nice work.

it always amazes me that people with such bad taste read this blog and make silly comments.
jamie   08.08.09
Terrible design, it just looks like a lousy and cheap chair, not innovative. I've seen crappy and fragile looking chairs before that looked almost identical to this and there was nothing brilliant about their design either. They were however unbelievably terrible chairs.
tek   08.08.09
i would compare this try with gaudi's furniture, only that he also revolutionized the technique also
AGB   08.08.09
I don't yet know your other work but these chairs are elegantly spare and daring; beautiful. Of course sometimes comfort or practicality are concerns; in this light I would like to sit on one. Any points of sale in Paris?
pol   08.08.09
i think that people who spend time writing on blogs haven't got anything better to do, say or come up with themselves.

criticism is easier than creation
nothing better to contribute you lot ?   08.08.09
@nothing better to contribute...

Quite an assumption that nobody on here is creating. I thought the comment section was to contribute your opinions etc.. so what - if they're not all praises and positive then they're not valid? Grow up. I design everyday.

This chair was just not a very strong design design, but I'm sure he does other killer stuff.
Chair Authority   08.09.09
an engineers shocking structure !! three weeks and they are done. i recommend an insurance prior seating. see you in hospital guys...
..   08.09.09
@ timothy liles...
Nice chair design.
BTW your website does not work in PC IE 7.

I don't think the criticisms of the 3 legs and slender structure are valid. As long as you're not an overweight drunkard the chairs should function just fine. Maybe a darker wood would lend the design a little more gravitas and reassure potential sitters.

I've also recklessly sacrificed a leg in one of my chair designs... Radar Chair
Jonathan Greenslade   08.09.09
You certainly attracted some comment, gotta be a good thing when furniture does that. They DO look light but they look well made too and have, as you say, only the essential bits. I'd enjoy to sit in one and discuss it as chairmakers might. A fatuous comment above about 3 legs only. The reality (function) is that our own 2 human legs do the business at the front and the 2 chair legs do the business at the back. I have also learnt over the years that punters will confuse looks with comfort IE I dont like how it looks therefore its uncomfortable . Nice work
peter   08.09.09
summing up:
you mustn't be chubby to sit on the chair
you mustn't be drunk to sit on the chair
you must keep both feet on the floor etc..
chair must be dark brown to calm down frightened sitters
ergo: a design for design's sake.
that makes it a shit chair for idiots that are not even
drunk.

Hey Greenslade, i almost flipped my five legged chair laughing about the Radar Chair
Faskingwhy   08.10.09
Very elegant!
David   08.10.09
@ Faskingwhy...

Thanks for taking the time to look at my Radar Chair design. Would you mind explaining why you found it so laughable. I'm certainly a novice at furniture design, so any feedback would be appreciated.
Jonathan Greenslade   08.10.09
What actually made me laugh was that you posted
it in the context of liles' pile of toothpicks, being
just the opposite in both looks and construction.
you are not really backing him.
and, if you mind, I don't find the radar innovative or
elegant by any means. the basic formal idea is ok, but
it lacks refinement in shape. it looks like a chair
i would expect in a dentist waiting room in poland.

just my two cents
Faskingwhy   08.10.09
hey tim - rock on - and push things to a limit - as you can see people will start to talk about it! I like your stuff
max   08.10.09
@ Faskingwhy...

Thanks for the feedback. I thought it was obvious that I only posted my Radar design in support of 3 legged chairs in general, regardless of specific construction methods or aesthetics. But anyway, I was very much 'backing' timothy's actual design, as I clearly stated in the main part of my comment.

Your criticisms of both Timothy's and my chair appear to be somewhat contradictory. Are there any contemporary chair designs that you regard as totally satisfactory?

BTW if there are any Polish furniture manufacturers out there looking to market to dentists, then please, do get in touch.
Jonathan Greenslade   08.10.09
The 3 legged chair = bad idea. Tried before never worked.
This 3 legged chair looks like it was built by a 3 fingered woodworker. BTW that's the good news. It looks bad...as far as functionality I agree with ".. 08.09.09", very unstable and likely to come loose then become dangerous before long.

Why not just put a shovel in the ground and sit your *ss on that..probably just as comfortable.
Dr. Goodluck   08.11.09
I'm amazed just how many idiots and/or trolls frequent this blog.

@ Dr. Goodluck and associates...
Google images 3 legged chair and behold your ignorance.
Max Bill's Ghost   08.12.09
Max Bill you're an *ss. We were discussing the chair but of course there's always one person who has to get personal. Take your sour attitude somewhere else thank you.
Dr. Goodluck   08.12.09
@ Dr. Goodluck ...

Are you on medication for delusions? Try reading what you write. My suggestion to google '3 legged chair' was obviously a response specifically to your comment...

"The 3 legged chair = bad idea. Tried before never worked."

So, quite clearly, you were not discussing only this chair when you commented on 3 legged chairs in general. There's always one person who can't stick by their comments. Take your self righteous hypocrisy somewhere else thank you.
Max Bill's Ghost   08.12.09
You don't know the first thing about woodworking. You probably think Keebler Elves make chairs somewhere in Sweden Get a grip Max! This chair is a crazy design that just won't work properly. I for one wouldn't put my child in that.
