artecnica: billboard collection

artecnica: billboard collection

artecnica has a new collection that has been born out of recycling advertising billboards.
impressed by artecnica's design w/ conscience program, TBWA, the advertising agency
for such companies as apple, adidas and absolute vodka, requested artecnica to exclusively
recycle their large format billboards into products. after a 2-year design process,
they are presenting the first two commercial products of the billboard collection.

'stretch bags' are die cut from 100% recycled billboards, transforming colorful advertising campaigns
into a clever bag. the design is drawn from the strength and symmetry of patterns found in nature
and has the ability to hold up to 75lbs. the 2-D design lies flat but then stretches into a
3-D structure when in use - a large bag with the smallest amount of waste. the solution is a bag
developed without needing, stitching, gluing or folding.
it is available in varying colors of billboards or natural brown leather.

no two bags are alike because of the various billboards used to produce them

'cases' come in three different sizes

the second product of the billboard collection is 'cases', which are fashioned after the simplicity
of traditional envelopes. they are crafted from sustainable cork and lined with billboard advertisements.
the three different sizes allow for versatility. the small and medium size can fit into a small
clutch or bag, while the largest one can easily be used on its own.

I always thought it to be a lesser known enzo mari design??!?
Don't have a book on him to prove it.
Anyway, two fellow students "designed" the exact bag when I was still in design school, so there must be something they originate in...
not a bad bag, though
Faskingwhy   08.12.09
the initiative is good, but it is a pit that such a company was not able to design a new form for the bag...

"after a 2-year design process" - pretty LONG time to design something what exist already!!!
hmmm   08.12.09
Also the Belgian firm Delvaux has once made such a design bag. It wasn't a succes.
cattach   08.12.09
I got the exactly same bag 7 years ago at the MACBA in Barcelona!!!
carlota   08.12.09

Great thinking outside of the box about what can be done with what is in the box! The design is absolutely lovely and marvelous. Motivates me, and undoubtedly others, to take at least a second look at what can be possible with what I discard without thought.

Much like the door hinge its a practical solution. ha of course people have cut lines in a flat sheet of material before. um, not a new concept

I guess what the blogwar boils down to is arguing, 'who made the better door hinge'
joinslate   08.13.09
The design of the bag is logical, the concept is elevated from it precedents by its environmental merit.
good job Artecnica/TBWA!
