chris boardman: intelligent bike concept

cyclist chris boardman unveiled his latest cycle concept to the world's media yesterday. the new 'intelligent' bike counts calories as you pedal, plays music and uses a solar-powered motor when you get tired.

the carbon fiber frame has an inbuilt computer system, which incorporates an 'unbreakable' locking device that allows only the owner to open it via fingerprint recognition. spoke-less wheels make the bike more aerodynamic while the tires will be puncture-proof with self-inflating tires.

'it could be built now if there was the will. all the technologies are already there, it's just that nobody's put them all together before.' boardman said. he also added though that such a bike would not be financially feasible' for mass production for around another 20 years.

Awesome!!!

the seat looks uncomfortable as heck....
jurgen   08.12.09
to rotate a 26" wheel once you need to rotate small one (6") 4 times. it has to use a nuclear power, to go fast enough)
and the second problem: the dirt will intrudes in mech and destroy it.
the industrial design is dead :'( dilettantes celebrate victory

so many internet concepts have limited substance, past the initial images

why complicate an object that has been perfect for years.

the solar power would take ages to charge a battery to make it worth while turning on a motor. whether there is a built in locking system or not, you would still have to lock it to something, if not it could be stripped down and sold for all of its 'intelligent' bits.

This looks forced... It's just about the aesthetics, but functionally I don't think it will work.
Nolo   08.12.09
bahahah solar-powered motor. this bike was overstuffed with features.
Lucy   08.12.09
hit one bump and you crack your carbon fiber rim... oh wait the rim is connected to your frame.

That's cool, you can just buy another- how expensive could it be? (With fingerprint analysis, solar power, and unnecessary spokeless wheels)
hober   08.12.09
not even the aesthetics are successful. Give me a 'regular bike' over this any day.

bikes are fun! i'm sure we can all agree.
nobu massiah   08.12.09
I wonder if the built-in motor is actually necessary.

The aerodynamic shape makes the concept seem like a racing bike.
Therefore, adding battery, solar panels and an electric motor seems pointless to me,
concerning weight, price and the actual purpose of a sports vehicle.

oh, by the way, jurgen... industrial design is not quite dead. it's nearly everywhere,
not just within the concept collections of two or three blogs you stumble upon.

Bikes with motors are simply wishy-washy, that's for whimps. whith a racy-looking bike like that you would never want to confess that it has a motor!
and the solar cells would better be used for the lights only, which is far more reasonable, and realistic.
otherwise a really nice concept, the inbuilt lock is great! but as lucy said: there will be parts you have to replace every now and then, and the spokeless wheels don't really support that need :-(. in this way, keeping it a bit simpler (and maybe a bit more regular) would be preferable. Needs some more thought...

Make 100 and put them on the road. Lets see how people like em!

I saw hubless bike was made in 1991, i think author also thought in 20 years, in year 2009 everyone would have money to buy it.

I think if thay would build it, it would be first hubless bike ever, think that one from 1991 was aslo a non functional concept.

For today there is a few existing copies, other are fan like and looks like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slsBpm6shcc

sure, hold down Ctrl + Make on your keyboard now.

i think this guys know exactly as much about bikes as that rendering indicates
laughing at this douche   08.18.09
Wow, some poor responses - it's a concept, guys. Have a think about what that means - we're supposed to be designers. Use it for it's intended purpose - to generate ideas, challenge orthodoxy and learn.

Sure, it's not as paradigm shifting or 'awesome' as some designs might be, but I'm sure he's approached this in the way he has for a reason. Try to think what those might be, rather than pooping on it because it doesn't immediately fit your own preconceived idea.

...oh, and the guy does know about bikes, 'laughing at this douche' - he's an Olympic gold medal winner in the Pursuit. Perhaps your statement highlights your own research capabilities a little more than it does Chris's design capability.
Matt   08.18.09
Yes i agree with Math's comment. I find design or people thinking of objects for the next 20 years very inspiring! When i saw this i wondered how much a bike has changed since the first one was conceived. and it is an amazing aesthetic evolution! this one cannot even be sold massively and you guys are saying no! come on! dream!
leb   08.19.09
i quite liked the concept, and i am amused by the comments, which are focusing on its functionality. Chris Boardman is a gold medal winner, but to put him in the position of a designer is a bit of a mistake. i am not sure at all, if he is the one who actually designed this piece. i would remind all the not bikers to put mr. Boardman beside mr. Obree. Graeme Obree is a true inventor. i would recommend as well to see the movie "Battle of the Bikes". which shows how mr. Boardman was defeated by mr. Obree. i cried on that particular movie, in a good sense... mr. Boardman is a great professional sportsman, but in my opinion i do not see him as a design driven person, reaching for innovation, as the bikes produced under his own name clearly show. give me a break with solar powered motors and other gadgets... i hope to see a feasible prototype of this concept soon, mr. Boardman.
