the big bench by wim poppinga was developed as a durable product for the contemporary public space.

it is meant to be a modern version of the classic park bench made from castings and shelves. it has an H-shaped profile and consists of boards which are 90 x 120 cm. a particular detail of the bench is that not all of the wood is trapped between the castings. the front shelf of the seat and the top shelf of the back continue across the entire length of the bench. these ‘free’ boards are attached to the bench through other boards, via the seat and backrest, which are connected to the castings.
