UK designer peter marigold will display his palindrome series at moss gallery, new york
as part of 'the harder they fall' exhibition. the series which he created for the designers
of the future award at design miami/ art basel 2009 is based around mirror and plaster.
two new additions to the collection will be on display for the first time during the exhibition

the palindrome series focuses on the experience of symmetry with each piece comprising
of half mould and half cast. the result is that the forms, textures and details on one side
is mirrored on the other. the wood is first assembled as a mould and then the composite
casting material (acrylic/gypsum) is layered inside. once this is set, the wooden mould is
opened up, turned inside out and used to create the opposing side to the cast. the two sides
are then bolted together using mould making fasteners.

each imperfection is complimented on the opposite side of the unit: circular saw marks
become symmetrical decorative swirls, knots in the wood become motifs and holes become
handles. the wooden halves of the furniture have been engraved with a palindrome word
or name, which results in the word being repeated on the cast side in raised writing.

'the harder they fall exhibition' will open on september 14, 2009.

somehow an interesting idea is executed in a boring manner. Marigold is a very good designer with poetic ability, that lately is showing not so top notch performance. "designart" is loosing its edge.

This isn't design, it's a poor excuse for art too. There seems to be a theme running through Marigold's work; average ideas, poorly executed.

Poor mans Rachel Whiteread?

IT'S GREAT

It is interesting. But it seems to be more about a juxtaposition of old wood and plaster. The Palindrome idea, I feel, could be further explored.

I'm glad to hear jagdesign's comments. Marigold gets a lot of press on here and I have never been impressed with his work on a conceptual or aesthetic level.

love it.

Bob - good point, but I always thought Rachel Whiteread got waaay too much credit for the casting thing - she basically ripped off Bruce Nauman - he cast the underside of his chair ten years before she emerged on the art scene... and the ancient Greeks dabbled a bit in casting before that I believe!
Isnt the idea here of designing a mould rather than using a readymade? Thats more a design language than art!
