james reynolds: far foods

in his 'far foods' project british designer james reynolds presents supermarket goods in packaging that highlights the distances the foods travel and the resultant carbon dioxide released during their journey. he also extends the idea to the receipt, which features a boarding card style tear-off strip detailing mileage and carbon emissions.

Very good ideas !!

im from Argentina
theres good meat too
elo   09.09.09
Brilliant idea!!! although everyone can understand miles travelled, not everyone understands what the number for CO2 emission really means (or weights in our environment)... some reference or a sort of scale would help a lot...
alin   09.09.09
It's also misleading. It gives the impression that all of these things are flown (higher CO2 output) than shipped (lesser CO2 output), and at the same time, that this how-ever-many-thousand mile trip was made for this package, and not that in reality that however-many-thousand-mile trip involved how ever many tons worth of that package. The math involved in breaking down the CO2 emissions would have to be too exact and thus inaccurate to cover all products and shipping methods. Good art, but bad science.
therris   09.09.09
Utterly misleading. Not only is the above comment true but also Reynolds is not counting CO2 emmissions during production.
New Zealand, for example, produces meat incredibly efficiently and freights it to the other side of the world, Britain produces same product inefficiently and freights it round the corner. Britain, and the environment, is the loser if the true costs and effects are not counted.
Bad science, glib art
If this guy is a student please send him back to his drawing board
Yes, I'm from NZ, but that's not the point, Is it.

This project here is worth checking out on treehugger? It's along the same lines but.. different.

very cool. but true, the information presented can be very misleading...this might include a company that works hard to transport goods through energy efficient means.

innovative design idea. zero in economics.
why not think in terms of carbon dioxide footprint rather than mere geographical distance?
i doubt heavily subsidized, inefficient european common agricultural policies are CO2 neutral...
furthermore we must rethink the use of excess packaging materials
