design real will be the serpentine gallery's first exhibition devoted to contemporary design.
curated by konstantin grcic, the focus of the exhibition is on 'real' items - products which are
currently in production, that have a practical function in everyday life and are available
to a mass audience. a range of objects by international designers and manufacturers,
from furniture and household products to technical and industrial innovations will be presented.
design real will also feature a research space specially designed by grcic, where visitors
will be able to investigate the origins and applications of the products on view. the exhibition
will provide new perspectives from which to look at the material world around us and to
encourage new insights into design.

Will there be examples of sustainable, ecologicaly aware projects (without necessarily known designers) in this exhibition or is this a non representative selection?
Who are the sponsors - Volvo?
Lets get people thinking about todays real problems and stop glorifying objects, even if they are beautifully designed.....
What's the theme though? I don't consider fabric wall panels by vitra covered in Kvadrat fabric anything other than a luxury item.... and the welding mask is clearly an extremely stylised item (it reminds of a warrior's helmet - a bit silly really - what would Dieter Rams say?). Not being a hater - therefore - it will be interesting to see what Gricic proposes is the thrust of the exhibition. It would be nice if he did not champion some kind of faux post-modernist-modernism that is thrown around by Jasper and his wannabes, but declared some kind of personal expression.
I like the guide pavers for the blind.
