cheungvogl: umarmung

cheungvogl is a young international architectural practice led by chinese-canadian
architect judy cheung and architect christoph vogl. they have sent us images of their
recent work 'umarmung' a floor-sitting couch. the gradual curved profile follows contours
of the body whether it is sitting up straight or leaning back.

it is made with reinforced polyester resin complete with steel support, covered with
eco-friendly flame-retardant polyurethane foam. the process adopts the latest variable
pressure foaming (VPF) technology.

Really nice work1

I don't quite get it. Where would this be used? The only place I would really ever sit on the floor is at home but then again I wouldn't because I would sit in a chair, sofa or bean bag which I am sure are all a lot more comfortable.

I like the form and aesthetics but for function I'm not so convinced. However it would work nicely in a garden/park where people sit on the ground. Yea, I change my mind, I like it.

great design!

surely main market is korea and japan, but imagine the hype if sold in europe by ikea, habitat, etc... it surley suits a student home and the same time it is a nice object to put in a wide and open living space.
Matthew   10.21.09
looks like a human ear....
jimmy   10.21.09
i tried to find a floor-sitting-couch in london some time ago, and i did not find any. researching on the internet i couldn't find any neither. i want it!!!
cassandra   10.21.09
stunning!

i love it!
Freya   10.21.09
I agree with Jimmy, but I think I need this.
Lucy   10.22.09
SENSATIONAL love it !
homan   10.22.09
Yes, it's good but we've seen tons of similar ones on the internet; I think this kind of design makes sense only when it's materialized. At the conceptual stage, I'd love to see something more extreme, push to limit, avant-garde, experimental.

I just want to know what the scale of this thing is...the rendering with the woman in front of it makes it look huge, but the small illustrations make in look much smaller. I would like to see this in both versions though, know that i think about it.

i checked their website: this seems to be a custom-made piece for private client.
it seems to be a very obvious idea, but thinking of it: i haven't come across a floor-sitting-couch before. i really, really like it.
marty   10.22.09
This is a unique and practical design. I would love to have one.
Zei   10.22.09
super nice!
cortez   10.22.09
the shape works functionally convincing and the same time looks oh so pretty:

as furniture and as an object beautifully designed!
vaios   10.22.09
so simple, so cool!
Genovese   10.22.09
Finally a beautiful object to look at in the room and functional to sit or lean on. Perfect for lying around the house.

I'd love one!
Kyoko   10.23.09
this design closes a cultural gap: it allows to preserve Japanese/Korean floor-sitting culture, while gaining from the comfort of a back lean without trading culture in for a western couch...
the idea is so simple, but yet it seems not to be thought of before - i am really impressed and raise my thumbs up!

(p.s. the designers seem to have revealed much better images on their website by now - looks really cool!)
Mikio   10.23.09
looks cosy and cool at the same time - and this combination is quite rare. could be in a museum or your living room, or even turn your living room into a museum :) masterpiece!
francis   10.23.09
agree: masterpiece!

it is functional and the same time sculptural - great design!
el greco   10.24.09
such a lovely design.
