wytze van mansum: cannondale dutchess

the cannondale dutchess is a result wytze van mansum's graduation project at the delft university
of technology, in collaboration with bicycle manufacturer cannondale. the bicycle is designed for
the female cyclist, with exploration in development and providing opportunities in which women
can express their style in the urban environment. the dutchess brings modern lines, longevity
and is low maintenance.

the rear fender of the bike acts as a structural part of the frame, supporting the carrier with a load of
up to 50kg. an arch connects the bicycle from the handlebars to the tail light both in a visual
and structural manner. its form also refers to the sturdiness, comfort and ease of ride drawn from
the traditional old dutch bicycle.

in keeping with the cannondale philosophy, the dutchess' overall weight is under 14 kg including
the integration of parts and varying functions. gearing and transmission are fully enclosed,
allowing the bicycle to be ridden in formal clothing at any speed (without getting caught).
the hub brakes are self-adjusting to compensate the break pad's wear and since the brake lines
are integrated into the frame. the handlebars are adjustable and allow for different riding positions
and can be folded together for easy storage or used for locking the bicycle securely to a fixed object.
both the headlamp and the taillight are integrated, the concept also contains a modular luggage solution,
kickstand and a pedal assist.

Cannondale...as always!

Lovely. Very practical and great styling. How secure is the handlebar lock though?
Other than this, I think it's very well resolved.

Marc D   12.01.09
Great design, but seems to be missing gears, which are necessary in many cities.

Nice and sleek anyhow.

if Cannondale doesn't take this into production they're fools.

That's very, very nice - I'd buy one tomorrow if it was available. At last, a utility bike that doesn't look thrown together from a parts bin. Only points - what about a built in lock of some sort? And provision for a basket on the front?

muyy buena! como hago para conseguir una!! me encanta!

I'm all for encouragind cycling in the city, but the owner of this bike is going to be very discouraged when the bike has a flat tire and they are facing a ginormous charge. When this bike does need mainteneance, it will be time consuming and expensive.

Most of the questions you guys raise here, are solved:

The lock: http://vanmansum.nl/page/the-dutchess/lock/
The gears: http://vanmansum.nl/page/the-dutchess/transmission/

The plastic bag with fruit: The fruit was eaten along the way. The bag was stored in the leather handbag. Arrived at the apartment, the plastic bag got a second life as a shower-cap for several weeks, until a tiny hole appear, and it was disposed.
