othmar muhlebach: printing your toast

design-aerobics participant, othmar muhlebach recently won second prize at
the berner design award ’09 with his toaster design 'printing your toast'.

the toaster looks similar to a desktop ink-jet printer. sliced bread is stacked and fed into
the design from the top, it's then toasted and ejected onto the base.

This is an interesting design. You don't generally need three pieces of toast at one time; you need them in succession, which this "printer" does.
The really cool thing here is that you could make it a true "toast printer". Theoretically you could have a grid of small heat cells instead of a single large heat source: You could upload a design, and the grid would apply heat as necessary to toast the design into the bread.

You could print your day's agenda on your morningtoast :-)

Damn, Cam! That's exactly what I had in mind, I already started concepting it..:S

it didn't say but is the bottom unit a warming tray??

i especially like how the cord holder warp around thing was designed.... too often thats an afterthought....
markaplan   12.19.09
this is just silly
nobrand   12.20.09
I LOVE IT! WANT ONE! Get it into production quick! The world needs this!
Taja Sukarya   12.20.09
He looked into his iMac and said, "I'm going to transform you into a toast printer" :)
They look the same and the ZUSE project is much more interesting.
difriri   12.20.09
In the electrolux 2008 competition, some guy do it something really similar!!!
andres Felipe   12.21.09
This is great, they should make the pair version that produce same freshness to make perfect sandwich
Yg   12.21.09
This is awesome. Are these just prototypes , or does the model actually exist for purchase?
Danielle   12.21.09
I like this one better than the ZUSE one. This one sits on the table and, importantly, holds a few slices of bread ready to be toasted. It's more user-friendly for eaters of toast. "Printing" 12x12 matrix images on toast would get old after a while.

i love it. it`s good.

i need in my office.
