there has been little development of the toaster since the start of the century.
while other appliances have developed and improved incorporating new technologies
and thinking, the toaster has remained relatively untouched. when the toaster was first
invented, eating tast was a social activity that took place on the breakfast table.
these days, toasters have been relegated to cheap plastic objects hidden away in
the kitchen landscape.
glide by george watson is a toaster designed to engage the user, re-evaluating the
social context of tasting by questioning everything about what we toast with today.
watson was keen on making a playful object that makes one proud of having on
their breakfast table. slip moulded bone china allowed him to create this sculptural form,
but also utilize a material which provided longevity. this is a toaster which brings life
and joy to a stagnant domestic appliance, and is an iconic object for the home.
