earlier this year, foster + partners and aston martin, UK and capoco design ltd, UK won a
joint first place with their designs for a new double-decker routemaster bus for the city of london.
now, it has been announced that vehicle-making company, wrightbus from northern ireland,
has received the contract as manufacturer for the transportation vehicle which is set to be ready
by 2011, in time for the london olympic games.

the new routemasters will bring back a more contemporary version of the bus which was first
introduced in 1956. the design will boast a 'greener' approach to public transportation,
incorporating hybrid technology. it will be 40% more fuel efficient than conventional diesel buses
and 15% more fuel efficient than the existing hybrid's the city uses. nitrogen oxide emissions
have also been slashed by 40%. featuring two staircases, the new buses will revive the distinctive
platform of the original routemaster. open platforms will be placed at one of the transportation
vehicle's three entrances (these platforms will be closed off at certain times, such as at night).
an initial design of the bus will be presented early in 2010.

These designs are all very poor. Why mimic an outdated design such as the original routemaster? If TFL think they have a problem right now with 'faredogers' they're going to have an even tougher time with this 'back door' design. Unless of course they are planning on employing another staff member to scan Oyster cards/sell tickets at the rear of the bus...which would be absolute MADNESS, and an extreme waste of resources.

What happens in zone 1 is drivers don't take fares. Oyster cards are placed on the reader and an inspector randomly boards to make checks. I love the Aston/Foster & partners design but from what I've seen on a bus magazine the production bus will have far less character than current double deck buses.

I like the idea of re-introducing the route master. The buses didn't work because they required a conductor to take fares, but now the system has evolved through oyster cards so the conductor is no longer necessary. Having an open door will speed up the services. However, it relies on the trust of the passengers. Nobody ever swipes on the bendy buses and exactly the same will happen here...so I look forward to TFL introducing a free bus service.
