jorge manes: nauru

utopian view of the future in london; a city where humans rely on birdsʼ droppings to survive

jorge manes developed an unusual solution for returning the world’s smallest island nation, the republic
of nauru, to its previous prosperity. the project began during manes studies at rca, where department head
tord boontje gave students a brief to examine a topic related to energy scarcity. the island of nauru was
an obvious choice, since it was once a nation rich in phosphate and has since been over mined, forcing
the government to declare bankruptcy. manes then learned that the island's once lush landscape was
actually a direct result of the feces dropped by the island's many birds. so his solution to returning this
island to its heyday, was to encourage bird wildlife. manes designed a new flag for the country showcasing
this unique attribute and a souvenir for nauru designed to collected bird feces.

why would any country want a pictogram of a bird shitting as their flag?

Xiguan, what about reading the text before commenting?

i read the text before i saw the flag. problem is that the rest of the world will see the flag and never read the text. this means that forever an explanation will be necessary--an indication of bad design. still, why use a shitting bird? the implication, and definitely the feeling, is that its shitting on the flag viewer and thus insulting everyone. Nice huh.

I agree with charles - the bird would be enough. One more problem, though, birds shitting on sidewalks and streets will not make the landscape"lush" again. good intentions, bad solutions.

twitter is so popular, so i often thought a real bird can work like twitter bird, maybe like yours birds dropping thoughts the real twitter bird's dropping will be the tweets sent from people to people

In my opinion this project shouldn't be considered as a practical solution or design. The views of London are, as their footnotes say, just Utopian views, nothing more. I didn't know anything about Nauru, and after I google it I found that they were one of the richest nations in the world!!! thanks to their phosphates, which are direct consequence of bird droppings... So I would take this project more as an call of attention. Nauru was destroyed, and if we keep on going with our lifestyle, maybe we end up the same way...
