daniel rossi: wedge bench

'wedge bench' designed by daniel rossi in collaboration with richard beumer
and jonny wray, is made of a multi-plex wood with an HPL cover that is CNC milled.
it fits together by slotting flat planks for the seat and back rest into the two side panels,
which are held together by eight simple wedges. no glue or nails required.

I don't get these pieces. It's like the designers are just starting to experiment with a CNC, they come up with an ugly, heavy and expensive piece, and they think it's worth manufacturing. Better take a look at Pirwi or Unto This Last.

not expensive...which is the point...cheers though!

I think these benches are really awesome. really simple! Super durable too. I think they would not only fit nicely inside, but out on a patio too! cool

The beautiful detailing makes the difference here, i think. Love the contrast between the solid frame and the delicate linework.

Very simple and functional. Nice!
There are CNC machines and sheets of wood everywhere. So shipping these won't be necessary? No transportation costs?
You should just send the Cutting data by mail!

I think its a great use of the CNC, I also think its an interesting direction of sending the data per mail! and also, they are comfortable to sit on. and beautiful...

clean lines, solid, and easy to assemble (there seem to be no need for screws and screwdrivers!!) and therefore very appealing to the non-mechanically oriented people. I would love to have a set in my sunroom (once it's finished!)

looks awesome! the subtle detail of the pattern on the wood is my favorite part. nice work :)

da. ro. - I'm pretty sure this is an expensive piece. It's made from 25mm plywood with hours of engraving. Say US 130 per board, being 30% of the cost that gives you over US 430 wholesale for the small piece, which if you place through a normal distribution channel ends up being a US0 900 / 1,000 piece. That's pretty expensive.

a.s. - Comfortable? It is a 90 degree angle made of solid planks of wood. This is as comfortable as a high school staircase. Are you all guys friends with the designers?

This is just bad design.
Mia   01.30.10
sure it's 90 degrees--aren't all chairs? However, the seating part is not level (straight up) it's sloping inward to make it very comfortable, and the back rest is slightly bent outward (so it definitely seems from the design). By the way, pillows could be a nice addition!!
