gilles belley: EDF energy saving adaptor

'EDF energy saving adaptor' developed by french designer gilles belley in collaboration
with EDF design department displays useless energy consumption during standby mode.
it illuminates according to the amount of power wasted by a device. the user can then
choose to completely shut off the device, or wait three minutes at which point it is disabled
automatically.

the energy saving adapters can also help reduce cable clutter as they can be used
to organize your wires.

I've worked on developing the same system when I was studying electronics, and technically we reached an edge which do not seems to be crossed here in this project: what happens when, for instance, you've chosen last time to completely shut down the printer by using the EDF adapter, and you want to switch on the printer again?
Can you simply push the printer ON button or do you have to switch the adapter first?
If not, the project would not be enough useful, and would fail.

Otherwise I like very much the added value of the object, its flexibility and its aesthetic. The way it helps keeping a desk in order gives him avoid it to be an object which the only function would have been "correcting other device's bad design". In my opinion this case would have been terrible.

amazing!
Where can I buy the adapter?

Maybe I'm not getting this, but it looks to me like I'm still going to use the same amount of cabling - it is simply being tucked neatly up under the table, and now employs yet another proprietary interface at the intermediate device?
It looks nice, but I just don't see a difference between this and securing a multi-plug outlet to the underside of the table.

I can't help but think this is another device that has been invented and produced (more embodied energy, plastic, circuit boards etc) increasing interactive complexity with devices in our daily lives, when there are already similar products on the market.

The primary issue of energy use is where the energy is sourced, hence the amount of energy we use from environmentally impairing sources is a follow-on issue. We must address the core of the problem, rather than inventing these band-aid solutions, which should be built into the technology rather than it being an after-sale add-on, creating more eco-waste. It's no use monitoring and "trying" to use less fossil fuels and espousing that it's good for the environment, when you're still using fossils fuels. This still falls under an intermediary category in relation to carbon reductive technology, as I'm sure the added complexity will in the long run deter people from using it.
