'denver' door handle by daniel libeskind

today, at made expo 2010 in milan, the prominent italian manufacturer olivari presented
a new door handle designed by architect daniel libeskind. libeskind is used to creating
big budget projects such as the art museum in denver with large-scale walls and doors.
these are his design signatures, meant to evoke surprise in the people who visit his buildings.
so, his fans might be truly surprised that the architect is looking to remake objects on a tinier scale,
including light fixtures, bathtubs, and doorknobs, for a variety of european manufacturers.
regarding olivari's new door handle he says:
'I believe people want a 'wow' experience in their lives, not just when they visit a museum.'

Looks uncomfortable and ergonomically awkward for the hand. Typical superficial graphics from Libeskind.

Jealous!!
Dan   02.04.10
surely there are more important things that need to be designed and considered than a environmentally expensive door handle?? another old school designer completely out of touch.
tom   02.04.10
It's interesting to see his move from large architectural projects to smaller scale works. Executed in true Libeskind fashion! I like it!
Christopher Hopkins   02.04.10
boring...
If you want old fashioned curves, frank gehry.
If you want old fashioned streight lines, libeskind.
Old fashion, no more imagination!
Thanks to God, Zaha Hadid is different!

I see nothing wrong with the handle except that it looks 1980 and I have seen similar handles in USA government and office buildings for decades. Speaking of which, the Denver museum looks strikingly similar to the Student Union at San Francisco State Univ built in 1974.

More aggressive and violent form-making from Libeskind. He's not satisfied unless he makes a handle look and feel like a knife, or a building look and feel like an alien attack module. What's wrong with this guy? Maybe his mother didn't cuddle him enough?
Tory   02.05.10
cant see what all the fuss it.. hardly original
Franklin   02.05.10
It's amazing what a self-styled "genius" like Libeskind can achieve when he draws the first thing that comes into his head!
Carlo   02.05.10
Well it makes sense in the context of the Denver Art Musuem, but otherwise just looks uncomfortable.
Sid   02.05.10
This looks like it was designed and detailed in less than three minutes.
Mark   02.05.10
At RISD (Rhode Island School of Design), this would get a FAIL grade as a first year project. It's just a quick knee-jerk reaction to the shape of the building. There was no attempt to do anything other than scale down the size to that of a doorknob. There was no refinement appropriate to the use or human touch.
Ryla   02.05.10
Libeskind has one gimmicky idea about wedge shaped forms. Unfortunately it is not a very good idea for tactile items like handles. But it is an even worse idea for buildings.
Susanna   02.06.10
Too severe and totally unappealing. It's like a bad student work. There is no depth to the form or else there was no real idea behind it.
Arcady   02.06.10
Sorry Danny Boy, did you say "wow factor"??? This lame effort has absolutely ZERO "wow" factor.
Adrian K.   02.07.10
I read that Libeskind's design for the building leaked for three years and the galleries were so badly designed people hit their heads off tilted walls. So, I ask myself, why would you take the inspiration for the door handle from a building which is itself extremely badly designed?
