‘new & improved’ is the latest project by the canadian design studio chromoly. the series features old
and broken wood furniture repaired using bronze. ‘what were once the weakest parts of the furniture have
become the most permanent and precious.’ the series replicates the broken or missing pieces in bronze,
creating a hybrid of materials. a chair, side table and coat rack are among the pieces in the collection,
each with a glossy bronze element contrasting with the dark wood. in each piece the two materials sit
side by side, joined together seamlessly. the designers jonathan sabine and adam pickard, ask the
question, ‘if you’re going to change something, why not make it better?’

Im impressed by the metal work, id like to know how this was done easily enough to justify it. Meantime, i have done things like this before to save items from being trashed but the result was never quite so elegant. Nevermind, i encourage everyone to try to recycle and give new life to junk. If you cant do work like this, at least think how such pieces could be re-worked into something else. These are excellent examples of perfect ongoing design project challenges for all of us. Pick a new one each month and see it through.
