notion: air helmet

notion: air helmet

notion is an industrial design studio based in dublin who developed the air helmet as a new form of head
protection for snow-sports. the helmet is designed to break away from the established helmet styles of
the industry to provide users with an alternative designed for their needs. the helmet deliberately avoids
falling into the street and backcountry categorizations and instead aims to be a versatile option for users
of all kinds. their design utilizes lots of textile padding that is surrounded by a hard plastic exoskeleton
that provides structure and protection. this design allows lots of ventilation in a different form factor
complete with a peaked brim. the intent was to give the average snow sport participant a helmet solution
to encourage them to wear head protection.

I like the look, but doesn't it defeat the purpose of distributing the force, from a blow to the head, across a large area? I would call this a hat, not a helmet, can't honestly say I'd wear it if safety was important (unless I'm wrong about the physics, or course).

I also really like it, it looks attractive, but I'm also concerned about the protection. What happens if you hit a sharp rock right into the big holes? It's great to make people who don't want to use a helmet to use one, but I think that it should offer more protection.

nice looking thing. i use more simple, but based on the same idea thing for 8 years in watersports. its shaper from two flat pieces of plastic foam with inner neoprene hood.

in this photo guy wears it on neoprene hood so it looks like fits very poor. the temperature is critical - +7. the beard fixation is the must. covered ears is necessary too because of danger of eardrum damage when falling after jums and loops.

this is the way it's done, and it has already been designed like two years ago...
But well, nice try guys...

Ezra, that Zanic Design helmet is hideous looking. The Notion one is a thing of beauty and as long as it gets a safety cert, I'm sure it will fly.

The zanic helmet isn't appealing to me at all, this helmet is. I like the idea that it is more ventilated, since that is an aspect of helmets I don't like.
