MTV logo refresh

the new MTV logo and the original 1981 design

the television channel MTV has decided to change their logo after using their original design for 29 years.
they opted to only slightly refresh the original design because of its iconic nature and existing branding.
the new design is essentially a cropped version of the original one, leaving out the tag line ‘music
television’. this cropping gives the logo a wider proportion that is in a ratio of 6 by 4, the same as a
standard photograph. this design feature allows the logo to be used to display imagery as a fill. the new
design was done in house at mtv, while the original work was by manhattan design. you can read the full
story behind the original design as told by designer frank olinsky.

I see way too much black! Why would they need to inflate their "M" beyond a reasonable proportion? The problem is - you try to change something that is already good, you have a very good change to make it look worse.

its goin for normal tv proportions to 16:9 :) .. not bad but can me more courageous ......
g studios beirut   02.09.10
sorry MTV, its over...
dire straits   02.09.10
'Banality TV' should be it's new name, they hardly show any music videos any more, just crappy reality shows that nearly always feature prattling 16 year olds getting excited about material shit they don't really need.
Awesome!!!!   02.09.10
This is very sad. The logo was the last good thing about the channel, but at the same time, removing "music television" from the logo at least matches the true programming of the channel.

However, they should have made a logo more meaningful to their content "empty v" (or empty vision) because that's all that's left without the music...

Remember when that logo stood for something new and unorthodox...?
sledgehammer   02.09.10
It looks v disproportionate. Where's the edginess gone to? A pity.
leowmc   02.10.10
why would they do this? what's the point? they should rather donate the huge amount of money to Haiti and make piece with their old logo, which is good.
muchacha   02.10.10
it's sinking! perfectly resembles mtv now at days
yulpzzz   02.10.10
mine god! I'll thicken up the outline, remove the extension, and take away the tagline. Throw in a crop.
Probably charge 250,000.
says more about MTV than they probably wanna...
no change here. lets just not upset anyone.
I like the idea from muchacha ... donate some money .. do something good and it will come back 20xfold.

By the way you guys, why do you all use fake id's?
Don't understand that. gonna get fired?
gonna get hate mail? not gonna get laid?
Peter Mclisky   02.11.10
because its part of the comment...
duh   02.11.10
Not sure that being anon could be a part of a comment. surely criticism, good or bad is really only valid if you are prepared to stand behind it. it's very easy to be behind the one way glass and bitch lyrical.

My comment is not really a complaint, it just doesn't make much sense on a critique based site. I would have thought you would all appreciate that the person writing is putting their reputation behind it as much as the designers whose work is featured are. just a thought.

:( byby Mtv logo ... I loved you

No good as always such a changes are due the constant flow or unprofessional and uneducated younger people squeezing themselves to the jobs they ain't able to do. Modern times. We hope for better but ain't believing it.
Don't fix it if it's not broken either you are Japanese and you call it a new better product for double price :)
