asaf weinbroom: new series of lamps

new lamps by asaf weinbroom

industrial designer asaf weinbroom has developed a new series of the lamp designs
that focuses on unifying concepts, mechanism, joinery and new technologies while using
wood as the main material for the new pieces.

the light fixtures incorporate metals, glass and a variety of plastic materials as building
blocks for the object’s elements. using these materials creates an overall mass produced
aesthetic. however, this is contrasted with the use of wood, a renewable material that
creates a sense of natural one-of-a-kind warmth and emphasizes a handmade quality
to the final products.

each of the lamp's bases are handmade in weinbroom's wood shop. the lampshade cones
are built from a lamination of red oak veneer. the lampshade texture accents the wood's
natural fiber and structure. the studio also developed a unique lamination technology in
the manufacturing of the cones. this encompasses producing a very strong cone made from
thin layers of veneer that is light in appearance.

wow heavy looking stuff.
jon   02.10.10
great lamps. they look really archaic, in a way. i actually don't think they look too heavy, rather solid.
Johannes   02.10.10
Weird, nice details, really enjoy the old wooden screws. I'd agree, not heavy looking, but archaic or rough forms definitely.

Too much materia for few ligth?

I dont like that trees give up life for a light bulb holder. I like the heavy solid look but need to find natural materials that are more plentiful and easily renewable. I can tell the designer is quite a driven person but please look at needless waste that can be avoided.

a bit too much like studio furniture for me; needless craft for the sake of craft. wooden screws are ridiculous. Although, the last lamp is nice. I think its adjustment mechanism is clever and understated.

You. Are. A. Moron.
Trees are a renewable source as highlighted in the opening paragraph. I grew a tree once. It was good because it grew. When I cut it down I grew a new one in its place; it was quite something.

Beautiful work. It seems that far too few people realise how sustainable timber is. Grown in managed forests, it is truely renewable. Even better, there is little energy required in its finishing and it locks away CO2. Plastics and metals may be recyclable but require vast amounts of energy in the process. Pieces like these are likely to be passed on to furhter generations rather than thrown away when the next rend comes along.
