alexander mcqueen made the most eccentric and provocative clothes for some of the richest
people on the planet. he represented the drama of fashion. famous for his sense of cut,
proportion and tailoring, mcqueen structured garments to change the shape of the body.
on catwalks he used wild hairstyles and make-up on his models and put them in those
lobster claw shoes and antlers.

there has never been anyone like him, and the world knew him as fashion's bad boy.
alexander mcqueen (born 16 march 1969) was the youngest of six children (a taxi-driver's son).
he dropped out of school at 16 to become an apprentice on savile row, worked for a few
designers before applying to teach at central saint martin's college of art and design. after
five-years as creative director for givenchy, he created his own label. as his originality
helped him gain popularity, he still struggled to create collections that main street boutiques could sell.
he was awarded a CBE for services to fashion, and won 'british designer of the year' four times.

his extraordinary talent and creativity mean that his designs are adored not just by followers
of haute couture but lovers of great style everywhere. this is a great loss to one of britain's most
successful industries and to the design world more widely. let's hope people will remember him
for the genius he brought to fashion.

recently alexander mcqueen launched the slightly cheaper McQ and went into partnership
with target. some magazines reported that McQ was selling out online within minutes
of his death announcement. mcqueen was due to show off his latest collection at paris fashion
week next month.

I can't believe he is gone- I remember the interview where he said "It;s just clothes- they won't cure AIDS or cancer", they're just clothes. He was a brilliant designer, the best in my opinion- immensely talented, visionary- I am devastated.
