clay speakers

clay speakers

'mapuguaquén' by chilean designer pablo ocqueteau was recently shortlisted in the
designboom / macef competition 'the intelligent hand'
.

'mapuguaquén'

the identity of chilean design is far from big-name brands and their large industrial factories.
it is a country whose traditions and cultural identity are still prominent through the craft-worker's hands,
whose techniques were taught from masters. 'mapuguaquén' (mapudungun for 'sound of the earth')
are speakers which are made from clay and have been formed on a potter's wheel. it was developed
as a proposal to rescue this manufacturing tradition, respecting local identity, but still keeping in mind
current contemporary needs.

surprised with myself, but I actually really like these
nice   02.25.10
well, i like how speakers look, but wouldn't the clay just break into pieces with touch of nasty base music ?
kau lau   02.25.10
These are really nice :) Would be great in park gardens/personal gardens!
Carly   02.25.10
i really love their looks but am wondering the same as kau lau.
darwin   02.25.10
Well, clay makes good drums & various other instruments so speakers should be fine. I like them.
Jono   02.25.10
The strength will depend on how high they are fired. If they are stoneware (1280 deg C) they should be fine. Earthenware - I doubt it.
Amanda   02.26.10
These look like stoneware and should last a lifetime, and would sound good as well. I think it's a great idea, especially for an outdoor deck. I'd love to have a set of these. A potter could even make lids that cover the speakers and keep them out of the weather when not in use.
John G   02.26.10
I would definitely have to hear the reproduction of the speakers. One would think that with one hole for the reverb to emerge from within could be modulated by having different size and number of holes. Guess they were tested d;-)
Jetwax   02.26.10
Great idea, and completely environmentally friendly. 0 impact to the environment, apart from the speaker itself...
minimarc   03.01.10
those speakers dont look like they would pump out to much bass, so i think the structural integrity of the housing would be alright. Should hit up my old girl and she if she will make me some :) Love the design. very suave
Jack Stone   03.01.10
esta padrisima la idea un 10 de calificacion total
Fernando Zarate   03.01.10
Absolutely useless if you want a decent sound. Clay pots are no good for this for a lot of reasons. Mainly a speaker enclosure has to be non-resonant, just the opposite to an acoustic musical instrument body.
don klatt   03.01.10
but it cant be that great sound....course clar got all to much resonance....try to hit it with genthly with a spoon......and listen how it "sings"......thats what you DONT need in a loudspeaker....
kristian Kjær Moe   03.02.10
Amazing...
Israel   03.08.10
They look unusual and very cool, but I wonder like others if the sound would be that great due to the resonance of the clay body. Interesting design though. Congrats, Paplo.
