the jury is composed of british artist antony gormley, designer tom dixon,
justin mcguirk (editor of icon magazine), graphic designer morag myerscough,
style editor of grazia magazine paula reed and david rowan (editor of UK wired magazine).

the judging criteria was to select 'work that reflects issues raised by one or more
of the concerns of the current debate on design; to consider the responsiveness
of the design to the social, cultural and economic landscape as well as environmental issues;
and to assess the degree to which the project has fulfilled the expectations of users and clients'.

Such sheer delight, joy and creativity in the fashion category winner. Why are these characteristics missing from the architecture category?

Is this the "elite" designing for the "underclass?"
And the even more "elite" selecting the winners? It appears that the jury has never been to Mexico to observe the disconnect between this architectural solution and the joy and exuberance of the culture.

This architectural design speaks to the often failed mid-century debate on design as it regards housing rather than the "current debate."

but culture is the preserve of the elite.
isn't it?
look at how most posts criticizing this (white, mostly male, middle class, public school) cultural hijacking are quickly deleted

Yes, I agree - CAPITAL "C" CULTURE is indeed the preserve of the elite, but you may have noticed that I call it simply "culture." The self-congratulating CULTURE has little to do with authentic culture.

I agree with all of you, regarding the world's official award programs - preservation of elite - is the main force that drives our CULTURE and economy.
And to censormeagainplease:
Real culture has always been spontaneous and uncomfortable, but I think Designboom, more than other sites, has always published the work of little or unknown designers.
Pam   03.06.10
The overall winner will be McQueen - who else!
Henry   03.06.10
Elemental is the overall winner.
It is nice, participatory, cheap, and not influenced by current architectural "iconic" approaches.
It's honest.
Lisandro   03.06.10
To Pam: This is, after all, a design site and the elite do drive that CULTURE and within that narrow view it might appear that the elite drive our economy, but look beyond that focus at the list of the world's wealthiest people and you will find that catering to the culture with a small "c" has driven them and thereby the global economy.

And to share the "wisdom" I have gained while working within corporations, saving the well-designed for the elite and passing the less-appealing to the less-elite has never paid off in the end. (It is called competition) I attribute this practice to an unwillingness by the "elite" to acknowledge that the culture that you correctly describe as spontaneous and uncomfortable has the ability to tell the difference.
