as part of the lighting plan in montreal, the quartier des spectacles explores the possibilities
of light for creating signage and expressing identity. lead by designers ruedi baur and
jean beaudoin from montreal architectural design studio intégral, this recent pilot project
experiments with projecting light onto the pavement to mark the urban landscape.
this intervention, realized as part of the montreal all-nighter,  brings together light
and graphic design.

the system shows pedestrians the way to major nearby venues, and highlights their
presence in the quartier des spectacles, as they cross at the intersection of sainte-catherine
and saint-denis streets. the preliminary installation, still an experimental prototype, was
made up of projectors suspended from towers and synchronized with the existing traffic
lights at the intersection. the projections illuminated only the crosswalks, clearly indicating
safe pedestrian passages across the street. it also shows visitors the cultural activity
in the quartier des spectacles.

théâtre du nouveau monde

projecting light onto the ground has been one of the central elements of the
quartier des spectacles lighting plan since its launch in 2006. light illuminates
the sidewalk to provide signage, reinforce identity and create a lively aesthetic
outside more than fifteen cultural venues. the double line of dots is the neighbourhood’s
common signature, rolling out a dynamic red carpet for visitors and indicating
the presence of a cultural venue at the pedestrian scale.

the project was realized in collaboration with the city of montreal.

sorry, but this is old fashioned. blinded by the light, tokyoesque, digital vs reality, oh come on. Human beeings are more complex than flies. Why do you want to make Montreal look like some futuristic nightmare. change comes from the inside not by applying colour where it isn't necessary. stop decorating the streets.
discipline   03.14.10
I don't understand the previous criticisms. signage systems has always been a study on how we can tap into our different senses to navigate through new spaces. contrary to mr. discipline here, I quite like the lights which seem to blend into the environement but at the same time act as peripheral aid to those who need some spatial orientation.

I have to excuse myself for beeing overly cynical in my last comment. In my opinion this is an example of a first degree decoration under the pretence of adding valuable information. These light installations provide only most basic pleasures because they give simple answers instead of raising any questions. I wouldn't say that people shouldn't like it. Most of them certainly will.
mr discipline   03.15.10
mr discipline, as director of this dynamic urban lighting plan, i must underline that this project aiming to unveil the activities and urban rythms of the area , is exploring ways to go much beyond color decoration by linking the level of animation of the area to different moments of lighting.

I understand your comment, probably made after looking at the still images... I share your view that lighting not linked to the soul of a place is simple decoration.

Quartier des spectacles is about urban rythms, and our work and explorations thru the 28+ installations and their different moments of lighting related to city life is about the evolving landscape that makes montreal...montreal.
jean beaudoin   03.16.10
'the soul of a place' 'urban rhythms' what a crock. this is a waste of energy in a time when we should be cutting back on what we use. gimmicky tat at best. light pollution at worst.
