Superb.
Not to take anything at all from this project BUT the UK should change their bulky plugs to the two prong variety. In fact I think there really should be a single universal plug fitting that works in all countries ASAP - in the same way all cellphones are now all moving to USB port chargers...
The issue with converting to the Euro/US/Aussie two prong is twofold:
- fuses. UK plugs are so ginormous because each one is individually fused; a feature maintained in this design. It's a safety standard here.
- change. This design works with the current UK system. Min Kyu Choi's design, even his ingenious 3-plug port, adheres to the current standard. I'm not saying it's a good system, but it will be difficult enough to convince manufacturers to adopt a new process for making plugs, let alone changing the electrical connections for the millions of residences and businesses in the UK.
Canadian in the UK,
Implementation would be a big overhaul but it would be very useful if all countries had the same mains voltage / frequency and same kind of plug. Would be interesting to see if in the long run it's a more sustainable practice than making multiple kinds of plugs for the rest of all time... If such a change were to occur the sale / need for adapters would probably be the biggest issue?
US and UK plugs are very different. See my note above about in-plug fuses. Also, does the US folding plug have a compact 3-plug adapter like this design? Or integrated USB charging?
Do your research.
that was my favourite design at the rca show last year
