'infinitek' USB memory
79.4mm x 22mm x 14.2mm, 22 grams

for anyone who has experienced the frustration of a full USB flash drive while wanting
to transfer files to a friend, there is 'infinetec' USB memory. while it does not actually store
any content of drive itself, it does provides users with an alternative means to moving digital
data. when plugged into one's laptop it uses the wifi signal for connectivity and leverages the
laptop's storage capabilities as it own.

wireless supported: IEEE 802.11 b/g/n
data rate 802.11b: up to 11mbs
data rate 802.11g: up to 54mbs
data rate 802.11n: up to 300mbs
frequency range: 2.4-2.5 ghz

FAT32 and NTFS file system capabilities
maximum size capacity: unlimited
interface: high speed USB 2.0

the 'infinitec' storage can be as large as the entire hard disk of your laptop or even larger.
by sharing all the external hard drives and servers that your laptop has access to, the data
is combined to create the IUM's infinite capacity. ultimately, the more storage space that your
laptop can access, the larger the memory of the IUM will appear to be. users can keep
adding storage which means that running out of space is unlikely.

the IUM is a plug and play drive: when it's connected to any USB equipped device, it will
always appear as a standard off-the-shelf flash drive. this means that there is no need to install
any drivers or software on any of the device one uses the USB device with.

with this new product, there is unlimited file sharing allowing users to share the entire
hard drive as well as any servers, external hard drives or other storage space that your
laptop connects to. IUM also allows users to share one single file or your entire hard drive,
thus, giving them complete control over what others can access. if lost or stolen,  users do
not have to worry about compromised security as none of the files are actually physically
on the device itself. finally, IUM drive features media streaming capabilities.

so, is it like dropbox/mesh/mobileme but wireless?
does it have a free 3G service attached?
this product doesnt seem particularly radical,
cant they just explain in existing paradigms..?

I hate it when certain electronic modules don't fit into the whole concept. The stick remembers me of a racecar, but I dislike its shape and colour.
darwin   03.24.10
um, I think its just a USB wireless transmitter
..that most computers already have built-in anyway
havent these things been around for eons?

One thing I like about current USB flash drives is I know where my files exist. I can go back and find them.

Surely with this, some software is whisking my data off to god knows where and I have to hope nothing goes wrong when trying to access it again.

The device serves a few purposes: you can use it to give all sorts of files to other machines in your home,
or you could plug it into your HDTV or Blu-ray deck in order to stream PC-bound content right to your den.
The goal here was to make other devices assume that this was just one giant flash drive, with gigabytes
upon gigabytes of media right on the drive.

So far as the receiving PC or set-top box knows, the IUM is just a stock flash drive with a capacity of your choosing.
Just drop files over like you would from a standard USB key, and it shoots across the network to its final destination.
Currently, it’s not suggested that you use this to send files over the internet — the lag in tunneling just makes for
a poor user experience. The demo we witnessed (watching a Simpsons episode that was hosted on a nearby netbook)
was remarkably smooth, with the user being able to skip ahead by minutes at a time with no visible lag.
There’s even the hope that the internals could one day be integrated into laptops in order to remove the need
for an external dongle, but for now, you can expect a summertime release in the US and a sub-0 price tag.

@astroturfer
the internals are already integrated into laptops.its called wireless networking and its been around for ages.
this thing has a market (old laptops, tv's that dont currently have wireless to connect to your photos etc.) but it also has a lot of competitors
no?   03.25.10
assuming your customer is an idiot often doesnt help sell products...even potentially mildly useful ones like this
ditch the voodoo and just explain properly what it is and what it isnt...
eg, does your company work like dropbox.com or is this thing just a data transferral device?
hmm   03.25.10
for media streaming it's great

There is a video on their website which makes its' use clearer. http://www.infinitec.com
