german design duo osko + deichmann present 'kink', a new series of tubular steel furniture
at the helmrinderknecht contemporary design gallery in berlin. the designs, which derives
its final form and function by means of a damaging process uses tubing that is functionally
folded, dented and kinked.

the 'damaged' steel which would normally be regarded as a defect, is in fact integral
to the furniture's design.

'kink' includes a writing table, a cantilever chair, a sideboard, a shelf, a coffee table
and a floor lamp whereby each piece is identified by a different kind of deformation.
all exhibited objects are limited edition pieces and are exclusively available at
helmrinderknecht contemporary design gallery.

osko + deichmann's first intensive involvement with bent and folded tubular steel was
during last year's 90th anniversary celebration of the bauhaus movement. for the exhibition,
'happy birthday bauhaus', they created the 'straw chair', a functional homage to the classic
freischwinger cantilever chair made of curved, tubular steel. since then, the design duo have
spent much of their time manually manipulating metal tubing, deforming it with kinks,
dents and bends.

FIRST THOUGHTS
didnt these guys (or some guys like them) make a copy of a marcel breuer chair that was half decent?
Does that then give them a license to churn out this sort of junk?
SECOND THOUGHTS
This stuff is actually pretty nice, its the kind of thing I might actually buy
pleasantly_surprised   04.01.10
I do like these designs they capture the idea of simplicity. The designs do exactly what they were made to do, they are not trying to be anything else. I will be very interested to see the selling price of these pieces. Being a trainee designer myself, from what i can see the material cost of these items is minimal.
very student like designs   04.01.10
i had exactly the same reaction!
also pleasantly surprised   04.01.10
i think that's the 1.-april-joke.
nice from far, but neither the steel tubes nor the bords will hold usual stress. have a close look to the coffee-table, but not to hard! it might break!
this must be a joke!
ppr   04.01.10
ppr, you're an idiot
germans are physically incapable of making things that don't work
nojoke   04.01.10
I really like how simply use of material(lock of book shelf). Design is very honestly. Very brave to use this homemade and imperfection style.

Anyone who actually sat in the 'kink cantilever chair' would get the April fools joke.
artlab   04.01.10
It has to be an "April Fools" joke. The structural integrity of the tubing has been hugely compromised. Those would fold up like a cheap tent in a hurricane the moment someone tried to sit down.
Marc D.   04.01.10
is this real design??
hannes   04.01.10
of course not!...
ahh   04.01.10
They look great and anyone fussing over the "structural integrity" of the product obviously doesn't work with steel or understand it characteristics.
bc   04.02.10
since when is experimentation with materials a bad thing? I, for one, feel that we can only make better work by trying things that don't necessary fit into our 'comfort zone' idea of functionally sound design. i love the simplicity of the chairs and the subtlety of the 'kinks' adds a nice surprise.
