daniel liebeskind: torq chair and table

architect daniel libeskind has designed 'torq' armchair and table for furniture manufacturer
sawaya and moroni.

the armchair draws its influence from museo di arte contemporanea (milano) which is based
on leonardo’s inscription of the human figure as seen in the circle and the square.
this ensemble is created from simple geometries in a complex relationship.

the concept of 'torq' continues a conversation with the traditions of tubular steel furniture
originating from the bauhaus, passing through the art deco period and into contemporary
times. what is new in the architecture of the armchair and the table, is the concept of transforming
a square tubular base through a series of projections, into a circle. 'torq' develops a new reading
in the relationship between supporting structure, the seat and the back, and for the table and
the top. a tension develops between the linear construction of the tubular steel and the volumetric
opacity of the seat, the back rest and the table top.

the 'torq' ensemble is as variegated as a building, functioning in different modes: line,
plane, mass, volume and space engaged in a contrapuntal movement. in construction,
use and appearance, the furniture pieces speaks to the fact that despite scale differences
there is a conceptual equivalence between furniture and architecture.

'torq' is currently being exhibited for milan design week 2010.

salade et macaroni.
stupide, laid, maladroit, ignorant, dangereux. Libeskind est un artiste!

it's not "dangereux", it's just a lame exercise on the old geometric movement of a square becoming a circle! you want to see an artist dealing with basic geometry: go check Sol LeWitt or a few of his contemporaries!
a.d.k.v   04.15.10
There is no doubt that this collection of furniture is controversial, but I think there is a general overreaction to anything with Libeskind. He is better than people give him credit for.

beautiful,
do not understand all the negative feedback

apart from its irrelevant and questionable aesthetic, this piece shows no regard for industrial process and the associated costs. The number of pieces that must be cut precisely, then welded and ground must make this an incredibly time-consuming and costly pile of geometric doodle!
S&W must have already figured they're not going to sell more than a dozen.!
rt   04.15.10
Difficult to criticise in terms of industrial process considering sawaya+moroni don't have any, but do sell extremely expensive batch produced signed pieces for collectors and business reception areas.

The forms are an interesting comment on the contrapuntal play of ignorance and arrogance that are common to all of Libeskind's ludicrous designs.
Jen   04.15.10
Doen't matter whether Libeskind is desiging a chair, a building or a whole city. They all look like he spent 30 seconds thinking about them.

“People complain as a hobby. It’s not about what they’re complaining about: it’s about them wanting to get their rocks off in an imagined domain. To say, ‘I am momentarily powerful’ in an angry world. It’s not the issue that matters.”
