amber chair by jaeuk jung

'amber chair'

layers of time are fossilized within the essence of amber... korean designer jaeuk jung
draws on the qualities of this natural resin as a solution in which to reflect and preserve the
final moments of a decaying object. his 'amber chair' 'fossilizes' michael thonet's classic
'chair no. 14', enclosing the antique piece of furniture and turning it into a contemporary
design object. thus a new chair is presented without removing the past completely, but conserving it.

'amber chair' was on show as part of 'the savage mind' in spazio rossana orlandi during
milan design week 2010.

a stale idea is a dull design.
serbizio   04.21.10
Like we need to fossilize furniture with the amount that is cherned out each year. This is just purely ridiculous.

Interesting effect, but really puerile execution. Real fossils don't come out in a square block, interesting how the ergonomics have been totally lost with the new form.

beautiful !

I think they should have tapped the mould after pouring in the resin... if you look really carefully, you can see a few air bubbles
Tom   04.21.10
I like the idea of a piece of furniture that might be discovered in a few 1000000000 years or still be here at that time.

Waste of space
Dr.Design   04.21.10
A few air bubbles? It's only flaw. Otherwise innovative as furniture. Seen the technique plenty outside of that.
Icespicol   04.24.10
Nice thought, which in my opinion should have never been executed but instead remained within the pages of the designer's sketchbook.
I have deep respect for Thonet, and for the designer, but, hang on, is this art? Because is surely isn't design.
Design is about usability, feasability and responsability. How much does this object cost (monywise and enviromentally)? Can I sit in it? How much does it weigh?
Sorry, I can't believe these sort of projects still turn up year after year.

toxic and boring. next.

10 years ago, same context with Jurgen bey. But this is really toxic and unhealthy. Waste..

So, basically, he's taken a resonably comfortable and efficient chair and turned it into and uncomfortable lump of environmental disaster.
