steven ma, wendy fok + dominik strzelec: ephemeral roof exchange

'ephemeral roof exchange'

'ephemeral roof exchange' is the winning entry for the open group competition by
architects steven ma, wendy fok and dominik strzelec. designed as an interactive
connection point between the three important regions of china's perl river delta
(hong kong, macao and zhuhai), this architectural design serves as a boundary
crossing facility between those areas for the purpose of maritime transport.

its features a three point access system which brings together technological, economical
and cultural entities and public spaces into a unified secure zone. additionally, each of
the three different points of entry pertain specifically to advanced sustainable technologies
such as solar, hydro and piezoelectrical energy.

three point access system

the three energy collection points are each representational to the location and orientation
of the site. the solar photovoltaic louvres with a south orientation, for instance, is designed
for the hong kong/ kowloon exchange entrance.

located at the hong kong/macao/zhuhai terminal, a hydro collective system designed
with humidity and rain water collectors recycles hydro-energy to provide a cooling system
for waiting guests. meanwhile, the piezoelectrical system is a self sustaining energy system
embedded into the asphalt and landscaping throughout the site that recycles and reuses cast
off sound and vibrational energy collected from the numerous passing vehicles during their
process of border crossing.

it's just all too messy! some of the visuals are really beautiful but you have no bloody clue where you are or what's going on
tomitwoshoes   05.21.10
OMG it's awesome! would love to see this in real life.

rainwater collection is admirable, but it looks like it just goes to a waterfall project which will eliminate most of the bounty.

in the future ... a project this big will not just self survive but give back a lot to the people who actually live there, not just the tourists or the pond scummers. if you have such a large piece of real estate (looking at the site pics) can you collect a bit more and share it out a bit? seems like a huge amount of the space is designated for car park and freeway areas. could not there be some more collecting there...??? gotta get rid of these mall architects .....................

tomitwoshoes- u hv no clue where r u because u can't even create sth that marvellous or u hv problem with ur brain in the portion for visualization.

anywayz,it's really a great architecture brings us to future

i like the design because its polarizing. concerning form and artwork this is absolute avantgarde. but yet i am not sure if i would like such a future. it seems a bit over the top and i ask myself if such a project right now really could be built and if sustainability measures could be implemented and would work out as planned?
phlow   05.21.10
what is the point of this ?! collecting water ?!
is this avantgarde or just design masturbate ??
looks very nice though.
nop   05.22.10
The renders are a bit confusing, overwhelming... But the building certainly looks like a dream, quite literally.
MeToday   05.22.10
Credit for what looks like a lot of hard work, but sadly put into wrong use!!! No clarity at all... (from the images, layout, and that paragraph on recycling makes no sense at al!!). Very nice renderings though... Belongs more to hollywood - but even that has clarity!!

I mean... all that stuff with the roofs and no one knows what they actually do (solar panels? come on), and what happens on top or under? (besides 'relaxing' in a lot of space)

Sloooww down guys!!! There's no vision here at all.....

I'll agree. This is too messy. it is a bad Zaha rip-off

Nowadays architecture is becoming something as the Egipcian madness, where millions died to rise something for Gods admiration. Thanks to great human gods and now, to great computer graphics.
A Mota   05.22.10
Mind bogglingly beautiful. Don't bother criticizing in public if you can't spell or use grammar in the language in which you are criticizing.
