bomuldsfabrik art gallery extension by rintala eggertsson architects

finnish rintala eggertsson architects were commissioned to design the extension of the existing
bomuldsfabriken art gallery in arendal, south norway. the nearby historic open mines will be
changed to serve as an open air art gallery. the new structures will be made of local wood,
consisting of walkways, bridges following the natural flow of the surrounding landscape,
with viewing sites anchored to the bedrock.

the temporary structure aims to achieve a higher quality of life with less square meters by means of simple, ecological materials.

nestled against a staircase that leads up to the V&A's national art library - itself a site of refuge and retreat - this free-standing wooden tower re-evaluates the concept of the 'archive'.

constructed with a wooden structure and wooden facades, concrete base and metal roof, the form of the house creates necessary microclimates for the entrance and courtyard outdoor areas.
