'mantle' by freelance architects daniel andersson (finland) and christiane flügel (germany)
is a shortlisted competition entry for the 'design as reform' competition organized by dubai-based
design collective traffic. the architecture category of the multi-disciplinary competition called
for the design of a new, contemporary mosque.

the focus of the proposal is simple: the functions of a mosque is simplified to its fundamental
needs and compacted in to a vertical volume. the design provides a space for more lively
public programs such as a market at the entry level, while the uppermost floor is the minaret
where the call to prayer is traditionally called out from. the levels in between hosts a gradient
of programs such as a library, interior garden, ablution, and prayer levels.

interesting skin but not a big fan of the layout
jp   07.18.10
its much better than the "rux design" entry, at least the understand the importance of mosque and the amenities
owais hasan   07.18.10
yes, the layout is like children's doll house
noopie   07.19.10
will the sand goes in?
hl   07.19.10
Sand will blow right through this, and no AC means it'll be hot in there.

And how are the older worshippers supposed to navigate all those stairs?
bob123   07.19.10
We do not need minarets anymore. I don't see anybody using it anywhere in the world. There's a technologic development about it...
Onur   07.19.10
I really like the shape as it reminds me of the Ka'ba, which is the most sacred building/site to any muslim, however I do have an issue with the barcode idea relevance and it's ability to bring in dirt, sand, heat.. etc.
Also I agree with bob123's comment, how will older worshippers deal with this?
And yes of-course we still need minarets, then were else will you call out for prayer!!

This concept has a more spiritual and practical appeal to it. It highlights education, community, spirituality and of-course worshipping all in one modest yet modern facade.
Maybe because this entry was more practical, it didn't stand a chance to win against the RUX design.
Maya   07.19.10
What an absolute joke.

'In quite moments, worship God'...as a barcode. You've got to be kidding.
Ahmed   07.19.10
between RUX and this i definitely choose for this concept, it can fit perfectly in a contemporary city, i like particularly the section which follows the different levels of approaching religion, the building becomes a community, a shrine of knowledge.
With elevators also elderly worshippers can access all the floors.
My only critic is about the light, that in hot countries i suppose is more carefully dispensed.
Franz   07.19.10
well at least this one respected the project function ! :) not bad ...
sara   07.19.10
i definitely liked this more than rux design idea.. that was preposterous!
although i do find the idea that words themselves become walls quite nice..seems fitting for a digitized world.. but with finesse.. it's as if the whole structure itself is speaking thru every level.. i like the concept where a person SEEKS, LEARNS, DEBATES, WORSHIPS, AND SINGS.. that did justify the design for me.. as for the environmental issues.. why cant they place a layer of clear glass after the 'barcode walls' and then air condition the structure?
just a thought.. a possible solution..
i felt aesthetic pleasure the way the wall almost folds away like fabric or like the crack in a mountain leading to a cave..
id love to read in this mantle..
saher   07.19.10
you don't know anything about mosque! .the reason behind it's structure.colors.form and light.
parinaz   07.19.10
organized religion is so passe
get over IT   07.19.10
Very interesting approach to the archetypal of mosques around the world. the idea of exploring the vertical elements of a mosque is intriguing. Though it might not be perfect, this will lead to other great architectural innovations...
Haz   07.20.10
I'm not an architect but I really like the first image, its cool but idea about barcode not creative, barcode means trade and money not the praying. But I'm happy to see new approaches to the mosques, churches, temples.
Isken   07.20.10
I think the main prayer level is not really a mosque, it's a wide mushola.
Reza   07.21.10
THEY DONT DESERVE IT.
ISR   07.21.10
WOW!!!!!!!!!
LMJ   07.22.10
Unfortunately, the designer Dont know any things about muslim and mosque!!! I think, they should undrestand islam then design.
