richard buckminster fuller stands beside his dymaxion car

curated by lord foster and luis fernández-galiano 'bucky fuller & spaceship earth' is an exhibition ,
which brings the different strands of buckminster fueller's influential career together with original
drawings and models and will be the first chance to see the recently completed recreation of
the dymaxion car.

lord foster writes:

'richard buckminster ‘bucky’ fuller (1895-1983) was an american genius who defied
categorisation. he could be described variously as a green environmentalist, a prophetic
visionary, a poet, architect, mathematician, map-maker and teacher, although he is most
popularly known for his geodesic domes.

I was privileged to collaborate with bucky for the last 12 years of his life and this had
a profound influence on my own work and thinking. inevitably, i also gained an insight
into his philosophy and achievements. with luis fernández-galiano, my co-curator for this
exhibition, we have tried to show bucky and the broad range of his work in the context of
his time.

bucky’s early career coincided with the streamline age which touched everything from
the design of zeppelins and aircraft to cars and trains and even houses. we reveal how these
designs set the scene for some of his most radical proposals in the late 1920s and ‘30s.
the exhibition charts the key chapters of bucky’s long career using photographs, original
drawings, models and structures together with the recently completed recreation of his
futuristic dymaxion car, which is shown here for the first time.

in 1951 fuller drew attention to the ecological issues of today when he referred to
‘spaceship earth’ and the fragility of the planet, as such his work and observations are
even more important now than they were in his lifetime.'

the exhibition has been produced in collaboration with foster + partners.

The 3-wheel Dymaxion, genius precursor to the vehicles at the heart of the fully automated interstate highway system of 2050 -- and doom of the fully automated interstate passenger rail system, alas.

If u knew anything about the the dymaxion car you'd know he was tryin to make a bad situation better(and takin on the big boys whilst)...as well if u knew anything about Fuller u'd know he did more than u ever will to help this planet and it's people Tom P.

What, Jf, you are babbling. I LIKE the Dymaxion, impractical as it was -- Fuller's strengths lay elsewhere than automotive engineering. He thought the car could be more than just a car and he's right, as the future will prove, which was my point.
Tom P   08.19.10
Tom P - the key to the dymaxion car and ultimatly its downfall was not its impracticalities but its engineering and styling genius! It could pretty much spin on the spot, (due to the clever single rear wheel set up) was far quicker and efficient than any of its counter parts at the time. and visually is like nothing else on the road. (its the eqivalent of somebody rocking up to work on a 8 wheeled 500mph flying unicycle by todays standards!)When you study its rivals its no wonder it went no further.... it just freaked people out!
