'R-house' by american firm della valle bernheimer in collaboration with architecture research
office
(ARO), is a prototype for a residence in syracuse, new york. it was the winner of syracuse
university’s 'from the ground up' competition. the project presents an affordable, innovative
paradigm for minimal to net-zero energy consumption embodied in architecture that aims to
perform in terms of cost and sustainability. wrapped within its iconic exterior are expansive,
luminous spaces that require only the equivalent energy of a hair dryer for heating. this efficient
plan can be tailored to meet the needs of different families and is readily adaptable as these needs
change over time. designed for high economic and practical performance, 'R-house' strengthens
the physical and social structure of the westside neighborhood.

Very interesting project. Hope we can get to see the finished dwelling with interior layout and materials used. There is just one thing, I notice that folks generally build there houses the same distance from the street, rather than placing them on different sites on their lot/section. This house deserves to stand out from its neighbours d;-)

the interior looks really nice but the window frame design on the front entrance is way too complicated and unnecessary. i suggest to just make it a few panes, not 9.

I wonder about the lack of eaves and ice building up at the foundation or near the entrance...

..and where is the facility to collect and filter water ??

..of course, you may assume that question also to be expressing enthusiasm at the over-all concept..!...it's just that now we, as designers, need to be considering more aspects of existence than ever before.....

James:

This project is being built on a shoestring budget, so we couldn't do everything. Even for such a tiny amount of money the project is exceeding some of the most stringent sustainable criteria.

the second skin of the house's design is untreated bamboo. the cladding, which becomes grey over time, is a reflection of the traditional barns in the part of the ile-de-france region where the house is situated.
