construction is almost complete for frank gehry's beekman tower in new york.
the 76 storey residential tower located just south of city hall plaza and the brooklyn bridge,
consists of a public elementary school, luxury apartments, a space for new york downtown hospital
and an underground public carpark.

the building's structural frame is that of reinforced concrete and is draped with a wrinkled stainless
steel facade. the 1.1 million square foot tower, will become one of the city's tallest buildings and is
due to open later this year.

The effect is his trademark, but the proportions of a skyscraper do not reinforce Ghery & Partners aesthetic. It looks like an effect rather than a concept.

It is very difficult to have an opinion about this project from a few facade pics. Is it just about the effect or is there something more? From the pics, I agree with 21ronin...

i wonder if this building has any spacial percepcion of his "concept" or if it is only an expensive decoration of old school towers....
yet, the yuxtaposition of this organic shape and square windows is terrible

Inception, anyone?
ru   09.13.10
a few satisfying angles but much too diluted, especially toward the base. i get the conventional square block morphing into wrinkled surface idea, it just doesn't come across so strongly. unique though.

Stunning. Congratulations to Gehry and crew for extending their sensibilities to such a great—vertical—build.
-JJ   09.13.10
creative but it looks rather disordered
Max at Cash Back Stores   09.13.10
I can´t see a clear architectural propostal!!!
Roberto C.   09.13.10
I love the commitment to the vertical build and from far away it's a truly beautiful effect. However, close ups of the facade are deranged and imposing...how will people feel coming in and out of this space? And what's going on inside?
stargzr28   09.13.10
I actually really like this building. It is still classically Gehry without being over the top. Interior shots would definitely give a better understanding of the direct relationship between the interior and exterior.
Redeemer   09.13.10
I really enjoy Frank Gehry's work however I can't help but wish the corners of the building were rounded instead of square to enforce the fluidity of the design closer to the top of the building? Maybe I should just wait for the finished product? :)
Textual Thoughts   09.14.10
i agree. The fluidity is lost in the straight corners. It reminds me of a condo in a funhouse kind of way. It would be more powerful if it twisted and flowed, like in some of the study models.

It's hard to get excited about a dress - it's what's underneath that counts.
ColRed   09.14.10
waste of money, resource and time !
sara   09.14.10
THE TOWER IS ABSOLUTELY CONVENTIONAL. IT IS ONLY A DISGUISE
DEBLES   09.14.10
Realistically? Looks nice. Costly to maintain.

I would like to look at it, but would not like to be an owner.
CommerciallySensitiveGuy   09.15.10
It's giving me a headache just looking at it.
I am sure that the birds will love it though: plenty of places to perch. It will be covered within a year.
salami   09.15.10
Love that crumpled skyscraper, and there is hope that in ten years time it will not have become boring.
migrant   09.18.10
I love all the spiteful non-architects here pretending they've authority enough to critique any accomplished architect's designs. You realize the argument against convention is itself banal and, yes, conventional? Please, get over yourselves or give legitimate critique -- by offering up your own, better work. The attempt should be sufficiently humbling to accelerate your maturity and, I hope, improve your etiquette.
reality   09.18.10
Nicely said dear reality !
diaouss   09.18.10
it's not a human architecture. it doesnt reflect, anyway, the power of architecture in human sense
mod rabi   09.19.10
maybe not the right proportion for the idea...
