cheungvogl: shinjuku gardens, tokyo

in feudal eras, the creation of parks and gardens (not necessarily intended as public spaces) was ruled out
by the authoritarian master and urban planning of the imperial leadership. today's democratic systems,
respecting private property and development, are literally incapable of creating further green spaces within
a city's inner boundaries, due to land ownership and costs.

'shinjuku gardens' by hong kong-based cheungvogl (judy cheung and christoph vogl) is a social, environmental
and urban contribution, solely based on economical profit which deals with the cost of sheltered parking
and green spaces within tokyo.

rendering of the exterior

'shinjuku gardens' is a 2 storey car park - which replaces an existing open one - that doubles the
number of spots available for vehicles. considering the relative tightness of the space, ramps are replaced
by elevators - within a 2 storey circulation this is feasible, depending on lot-based car-lifting. even by doubling
the amount of parking spaces over two levels, the ground area is reduced by one fifth, thanks to a more
effective layout which provides more free green space, along with the infiltration of rain water.

'green cladding'

the structure's cladding is replaced by wide balustrades, providing the ground for grass to grow and camouflage
the car park within. this creates 'green walls' which enrich the neighbourhood's environment with vertical fields of grass,
instead of the common view of parked cars. the top of the parkade provides the actual new 'shinjuku garden',
a green space, publicly accessed - a green oasis above the facility.

inside there is street art exhibited, making use of the walls which act as blank canvases for young artists.
the museum-like approach, which is still close to the subject, shows further the potential of the everyday environment
to be an enriching experience which is evident in the typical car park lighting being replaced by neon-light installations.

Nice one
The perspectives do not show any allocation for soil depth for the grass to grow healthy, when u factor soil depth the façade look will change UNLESS they are thinking of a hydroponic system
How to irrigate these lines of grass is as well tricky as the horizontal stretch of plants all contained in a planter, require a slope for drainage…it might be interesting to let excess of water drop from one level to another
jamz   09.29.10
This is an icon. Not one of the big, flashy, monumental ones. It changes its environment humble and beautifully. Almost, like if you don't pay attention, you don't know why you feel better... It is a silent icon.
Tazio   09.29.10
Absolutely beautiful. Let's do this everywhere.

serious technical watering and soil problems have not been solved at all.
Worrying that some architects still produce images without going that little further that would make these projects come true.
archic   09.30.10
This is a very good example of the paradox of our time. Everything MUST be green. In this case the green should cover the parking... but the parking is still there, with the big cars. The text even says: "which replaces an existing open one - that doubles the number of spots available for vehicles", so this is worst than before! The parking shouldn't be built (or replaced) at all . Let's do a simple garden with bicycles places, this will be a good message... The goal is not to hide all the dirty things by the GREEN king, the goal is to find NEW solutions!
Bru   09.30.10
Bru: I think it is better to solve problems, instead of ignoring them: cars are real and parkings too. The idea is what matters, and maybe it can be copied elsewhere.
Adrian   09.30.10
@ Adrian: My feeling is that every new architectural project, because there is a tree on the top of the roof, will be applauzed by the critics in the name of ecology. We let every ugly ("real") things there, and cover it with green, which doesn't solve anything.
Bru   09.30.10
I love it. No, it's not a "perfect world" solution, but it's a great improvement over the way most cities look today. With solar powered pumps, excess runoff water from the surrounding city area could be used to supplement the building's water needs, if direct rainwater isn't enough. Water falling from layer to layer would add interest and beauty, and discourage vandalism. Could rice be grown here instead of grass?
Exxtremitie   09.30.10
Absolutely amazing and creative! Cars and infrastructure are taking up so much space, and therefore taking away so much quality from dense urban spaces, that re-tribute of green areas (vertically and horizontally) seems such a logical consequence. One should think, why did this not happen earlier!

water: no problem - with humidity above 90% in Tokyo, water suply shouldn't be an issue. Otherwise a perforated tube will easily do the job.

soil: no problem - many sorts of grass grow perfectly strong and straight on very poor soil. 5 to 7 cm should be enough, maybe a plasic or metal grid for the roots to stabalize.

Also: i read, that the designer do not only understand environment as a sustainable term, but also as an social one, and that's what real sustainable design should always be about. Very, very succesful addressed!
Veron   09.30.10
Utterly beautiful! The associations of rice fields, imperial gardens and traditional fragile light-weight structures make it feel so comfortably fitting into its context – as if it was designed and build centuries ago and being a part of a long tradition.
amid2   09.30.10
Nice! A real solution, and what a beautiful one. And even if one day electric cars will replace nowadays cars, this design will stay a valid solution!
Kyle   10.01.10
(green) thumbs up!!! one of the coolest designs i have ever seen!
krueger   10.01.10
A clamingly beautiful design. Love the way the project tactfully blends in environmental, social, cultural and economical issues.

Art exhibition in a carpark is an ideal vision to bring the arts into our everyday lives. We need more architects who understand and blur between architecture and art; who care and appreciate what we artists do.

Beautiful work!

I love the sensitive, yet functional approach to this very practical problem.

Cars and carpark related issues are inevitable problems in urban cities especially when the cost of land is so expensive. The design is a viable, manageable and effective solution and most of all, beautifully executed.

The project incorporates various functional measures by providing more than double the amount of carparking spaces, offering spaces for art exhibition and planting vertical green fields to absorb CO2 emissions. Amazing!
Yayoi   10.03.10
i hope the grass grows neatly - nice concept - perhaps a sedge might do the job -
gardenbeet   10.03.10
Awesome!
