santiago calatrava's chicago spire
santiago calatrava's chicago spire will not be built. the tower which was to spiral up to 2000 feet,
included 1,200 apartments and was to be situated on the shoreline of the city's lake michigan.
the anglo irish bank is seizing control of the stalled chicago spire’s site from shelbourne development.
the spire was originally announced in 2006 following the acquisition of the land at 400 lake shore drive
in chicago by shelbourne's executive chairman, garrett kelleher. the structure was to have 124 storeys,
plus an antenna that would take it above the chicago's sears tower and the CN tower in toronto, canada
to be the largest freestanding structure in the western hemisphere.
construction began in 2007, but there has been no activity on the site for some two years, with foundation
construction suspended as pre-sales dried up following the collapse of lehman bros in september 2008.

good news XD

Eduardo 10.19.10
The only good thing to come out of the financial collapse. That unicorn is so out of place in Chicago.

thanks god!!

Better yet is the 200ft circular hole that's now ringed by a chainlink fence. Feels like art.
Jimr 10.19.10
I don't care what you say. Calatrava is one of the greatest architects of our time and he should have some footprint in the city that started it all.
mike 10.19.10
too sexy for chicago
Eric 10.19.10
The world of architectures it started to be absurd!!!! That's like Swiss-Re higher and with the vibe of the Dubai's architecture style!!!! I love Calatrava but this isn't his best, i'm sorry.
PD: What about the 11S phobia???? I wouldn't like to work there!!!!

I think it looks interesting compared to some of the square box type buildings around it (esp the one at the pier which I always thought is pretty ugly) and it would have been a good addition although perhaps a bit shorter.
ybh 10.20.10
Interesting scale and visual texture compared to the Pier and other lakefront properties. Maybe the form isn't tweaked, but unlike many who have commented to the contrary, I think it would be be a brilliant addition to the Chicago skyline.

looks rather phallic, not gonna lie....
Paree 10.20.10
i agree with Mike yes Calatrava is one of the greatest architects of our time yes
nuha 10.20.10
I can't believe it was designed by Calatrava, but don't mind about it and Chicago is great place to have everything.
Li Rui 10.21.10
Architecture has embraced CAD whole heartedly, and now architects are building anything they can dream up without thought or consideration for why. It will continue for a while and then a minimalistic approach will return.
I would blame it on the architects but blame rests on the clients as well.
I'm glad it wasn't built.

You have to give it to Calatrava, though. He has balls to design something that will alter a cityscape like that.
