'house at the park' by german practice splendid architecture is a residential house
for a family of six in hamburg, germany. true to its name, the site of the project
is an old tree population with a large number of trees in and around the grounds.
the design aims to integrate this precondition into the architectural concept rather
than oppose it.
built on piles, the house features a large inner courtyard that pivots around an established
tree. largely open in terms of both air and glazing on the south side, the dwelling opens
up to the park with overlapping indoor-outdoor spaces. the covered patio space is built
around a tree trunk which offers a dynamic and organic architectural element to the
outdoor space. using a fluid and continuous structural form, the design aims to effortlessly
exist with the environment.
the dwelling has been awarded 'the most beautiful new built house' by the alliance
of german architects.

probably a merchant bankers pad. Only they could afford this oppulance during/after the recession. Looks fantastic though...
I'm not envious...much! 10.21.10
gorgeous

Can you say neglected landscape.
After such an impressive effort to preserve the 'old' trees, wouldn't it make sense to recreate a similarly 'old' landscape as well instead of a green rug?

I'd let the garden go feral and wait for the moss to creep the walls! Maaaan this place would be amazing with some dereliction. Beauty overrun by nature! Where's my merchant banking wife?

My problem with this design is the right angles. Looking at photo #9 in particular, if the right angles at each end of the house had curvature built in, there would be more empathy with the trees around it. It is certainly an imposing statement, but while appreciating the architects & owners successful desire to save the trees and creating a very interesting dwelling, I feel it is a bit severe in the landscape. d:-)

had the architect thought of what would happen to the house if the tree that went through the roof swayed or fell during a storm?
also nsects and leaves would be entering the house day and night.

well done to the architect and the owner. I think the building is divine, and love the colour inside to enhance personality. I think that all parties involved have loved working and developing it, and it shows. That in itself deserves respect

wouldn't it be better to respect the natural topography than having a elevated terrace with a tree trunk running through. I think the tree suffered much during construction process. Imagine the space it needs for its root - now all covered by this terrace.
But even the design looks very post! Architectural concepts from the 90ies (ribbon architecture I call it) mixed with natural stone cladding. It looks like a battle of materials, so do the different windows: French window in one edge, long glazed parts in an other and square shaped punch windows... to much money to many ideas to much of all....

divided into two wings, the interior of this residence is elevated and oriented to frame the mountain ridges on this steep slope in the alps.
