located in seattle, washington, the art stable is a recent project from olson kundig architects.
with a total area of 25,556 square feet, the art stable is an urban infill project designed for artists and
people with large art collections. the site is a former horse stable that was converted into a seven-story
loft building with five living units and ground-level retail space. the building’s key design feature is
a series of large doors on each level that are connected on a single 80 foot tall hinge. on top of the
hinge is a small davit crane that can be used by residents to lift objects form the alley below into their
unit. the building also features a geothermal heat pump system that runs through the augercast
structural pilings of the foundation, the first of its kind in the US.
