world and all our editors are members of this collaborative project (sorry, but different from other online
magazines and blogs, we do not work with
freelance contributors under a paid-by-per-article contract).
birgit lohmann (b. hamburg, germany) and massimo mini (b. siena, italy) are the founders of designboom.
for over 20 years they practiced as designers and product development managers for a number of renowned
italian companies, architects and master designers (including achille castiglioni, andrea branzi, bruno munari,
and renzo piano). since 1987 and for more than 10 years, birgit has been the personal design assistant of
vico magistretti, and during this time, for 6 years, she also joined enzo mari in the art direction of KPM,
the historic royal porcelain manufacture in berlin, germany, founded in 1763 by frederick the great.
birgit and massimo have also worked as design historians for justice departments
and international auction
houses. as researchers and lecturers, they have conducted seminars on industrial design
at a number of
prestigious international universities. in 1999, they escaped their 'stressful careers' and lived in bali, indonesia,
where they pioneered the format of the cultural online magazine, developing designboom, with headquarters
in milan, italy. see the public linkedin profile of birgit lohmann.
luca trazzi (b. verona, italy) became an associate in 2000. luca was the closest collaborator of the italian
master architect aldo rossi, participating in the development of several projects such as milans congress building
and the new city center in kuala lumpur. the collaboration with aldo rossi went on for over 15 years and after
rossi's sudden death, luca opened his own studio in 1993. luca is best known for his many designs of illy
expresso machines and cafes around the world.
