'the new (library of) alexandria' by hong kong-based architecture practice cheungvogl
(judy cheung and christoph vogl) is a conceptual project of the library in today's
and the future's context. recognizing the recent trend of the digital word overtaking
the printed word, the design explores the notion of complete binarization by offering
a new digital media that incorporates interaction, connection, real-time updates and
accumulative contribution into a global information source.

since the digital word does not require any physical space, the design concept does not
propose a 'library' in the conventional sense, but instead aims to place digital information
in relation to the context of the physical location--to the city; to the world. the user is enabled
to point at a place, building or area and receive individualized references, like history leading
to overlaying the actual scene with historical maps, images, and other relevant information.
these findings can then be forwarded by email or transferred through a data carrier with no need
for users to return books to the library again.
the physical architecture of the library is less restricted by the function, but enabled to link information
and place in a locally coherent gesture. the space still serves as a cultural and social landmark,
providing a platform for discourse, research and information exchange.

very well thought: why are there so many projects dealing with libraries for books these days, where digital media has overtaken printed information for some time? if the library as an institution is meant for research and distribution of information, the offering of books on the shelves doesn't represent the state of the art, does it?
