asymptote architecture: kaohsiung port terminal

new york-based asymptote architecture has sent us their design entry for the
'kaohsiung port terminal 2010' competition in taiwan. the multi-use facility houses both
terminal and public facilities such as exhibition and event spaces and transforms the previously
industrial site into an 'urban hub and global gateway'. conceived as a place that would awaken
the waterfront, the design specifically extends beyond the site and into the city's center,
drawing both locals and visitors towards its hovering configuration.

the design frames the harbor and the water beyond with two asymmetrical towers defining the perimeter
of the facility, connected by the platform and a curved terminal that floats in between. an open air plaza
provides circulation around the base, balancing intersections of public and private, indoor and outdoor
spaces. the fluctuating volume unites the center of the city to the waterfront, where other public spaces
are planned to be located. the form, together with the lighting, aims to provide a dramatic entry experience,
from both the water's edge and the city.

the interwoven structure of the curved roof provides shelter to the natural elements
and illumination in the evenings when various activities are taking place. the design, a geometric,
scale-like pattern offers a continually transforming environment, affected by light, shadow and time of day.
below, sculptural panels are suspended to define the terminal hall - an open space dedicated to temporary events -
which is naturally lit from the penetrations in the ceiling above. the exposed structure scattered throughout
the space allows for a subtraction of walls around the outer edge, providing panoramic views of the water and the city.

This is BEAUTIFUL! Have you seen Reiser and Umemoto's winning entry?!? are you kidding me?!?

Reiser and Umemoto's project is UNBELIEVABLY BAD! Something under the table had to happen for them to win over Asymptote's design!

Does this remind anyone of a certain, soon to be released, Disney film. Beginning in Tron and ending in Legacy

I have seen the plans for Reiser and Umemoto's design - it looks more like a German museum! Shocking!
There's no justice in the architecture and design world!

I was thinking tron as well :)

that section w/ the boat is pretty sweet
LML   12.16.10
A competition is not just about images, there is a program, a concept... "looks like a german museum"...never heard such an absurd comment!

sure is swoopy
dbkii   12.16.10
if architecture can turn as to be individualistic, non-communicating persons, this architecture may do that for shure. feeling like walking in Martian spaceship without possibility to understand how it works.

its an extension from yas marina.
what seems to be veil there has matured into a more bolder architecture.

Nothing new, always the same!
Architects has no new ideas nowadays.

i think all that happened is that the judges looked beyond the imagery of this project. while it may be beautiful, it doesn't do as good of a job with the program and moving people through the space. reiser and umemoto's is much more intuitive to the user, and will facilitate a higher amount of human activity.

as for the "german museum" comment, i'm not sure what you mean either, lol. the germans do a lot with box forms in their designs, but you may be thinking of the dutch - they love their cantilevered boxes and projecting squares. the reiser + umemoto design definitely has some of that going on.
