copenhagen-based BIG architects have unveiled their design of 'vilhelmsro primary school',
an academic facility which focuses their curriculum on nature and sustainability in
asminderoed, denmark. taking the undulating hillside of the site as a point of departure,
the design features a series of bands which pleat and crisscross to merge with the surrounding topography.

the oscillating roofline is experienced from both the inside and the outside.
outdoor green terraces and courtyard spaces are generated in between buildings.
though all one-storey, the alternating peaks and ceiling heights allow natural daylight
to stream into every class room.  the sod makeup facilitates passive energy measures
such as mitigating heat island effect, acting as thermal mass and evaporative cooling qualities.
rain water runoff is reduced, collected and stored for non-potable usage.
cross-ventilation is also encouraged through operable windows and overlapping openings.

really nice design.

what's great about BIG is that they are able to maintain their identity with such bold geometries, but still respond to each site in a sensitive and unique way.

also refreshing to see a new concept that works on every level, but doesn't necesarily rely on software as a gimmick or crutch.

one thing i do regret about seamless landscapes like this is that at a certain point you have to provide fall protection. it's such a shame that the kids won't be able to to meander across the all the buildings and really use that space as it appears conceptually. i mean imagine watching a meteor shower while sitting on the edge of the tallest roof, or all the sledding opportunities!!

still i applaud the work and the very clear presentation.

tres beau projet criative et plein d'imagination ,j'aime beaucoup bravo.

i am serious about it!! i like big but, i applied there and my last year project was like this! i am not trying to say that big is a creep ´cause of this but, i mean... this is too obvious
weird   12.17.10
very bad project ... it's always the same ... like a student' project
antoine   12.17.10
I'll be very surprised if that 1:20 section actually works. I would expect something like this to be concrete structure (less water proofing issues), or contain a lot of large steel beam. The "carving out" effect would require the entire site to be dug out and tanked with retaining walls... blah blah.

In short, this elegant solution will cost at least 10 times a post & beam "conventional design".
idle_crane   12.18.10
This is stunning. I have one concern, though: accoustics. A few months ago I was visiting a new school building that included several classrooms with high sloping roofs and lots of hard surfaces. Unbelievably noisy. The teachers had rigged all kinds of homegrown fixes—they were at war with the space...

its simply great.Architects have made a very good disign keeping in mind the closeness to nature.A good case which students of architecture can make a best use.i wish the big group all the best for their future projects>
deepak sawant   12.19.10
How do you keep the kids (from falling) off the roofs? I assume this was thought of but it's the obvious major issue and not addressed in the article/presentation.
shamble   12.20.10
@shamble, I thought about this issue too. But then I saw some handrail in the image under the images (left) roof terraces
(right) courtyards.
(drawn with lines)
I don't think all it's perfect.
Have a nice day.
