hong-kong based practice cheungvogl (judy cheung, christoph vogl) has sent us
images of their new project, 'the public layer', a new urban intervention that aims
to provide maximum horizontal space in a vertically orientated city centre.
taking le corbusier's model of the layered city structure as a point of departure,
the design features a new hybrid interpretation of a skywalk, public space and transport,
residential developments and infrastructural opportunities.

located in the compact city of hong kong, the case study reclaims the space above
des voeux road to generate a 'public podium' which consists of an exhibition space,
pedestrian-friendly zone, public facilities, and retail. the street level below benefits
from shade while comprehensive connections are made between the MTR
(public transport hong kong), car park, and public space. integrated to its site,
'the public layer' involves its context to become an urban landmark within the city.

Again a cliche about Hong Kong.......just a cliche.... and the collage and thema remind strongly the collage for the project of ALISON AND PETER SMITHSON for the golden Lane....

But at least it is just a case study........

isn't this essentially what NYC just did with the High Line project?

after all: there are at least some things the West could learn from Asia in terms of city planning.

if guggenheim occupies these spaces above the streets, that will be even cooler than bilbao

slightly undulating protruding windows are the face of the residential and retail building. the gently tapered form integrates into its historic surroundings, while still contributing to its future development.

eight hundred resin boxes were arranged atop steel rods of varying lengths, creating the sense that each unit was ascending at its own pace, as if being drawn upward by an invisible thread.
