set for the urban context of manhattan, new york, the 'museum of comic and cartoon art' (MoCCA)
by reid nystrom and alessandro ortiz is a design proposal for a new facility dedicated to the education
and preservation of the graphic and literary medium. sited on a 14,000 square foot lot,
the multi-storey museum aims to be the architectural embodiment of the art form in both its internal
organization as well as its exterior treatments.

presentation of the design done in the style of a comic book

by intersecting layers of metal, concrete, crosshatched and fritted glass, the building's volume is
wrapped in an effect that mimics vintage comic ben-day dots. the layout of the facilities,
which include a gallery, retail spaces, a library, a cafe, convention and conference centers,
lecture halls, and a theatre, are organized to create a fully immersive environment that could be
'read' as one proceeds through the building, continually expanding and contracting the spatial
experience to reveal a narrative.

...and so begins the decade long imitations of BIG.

if you say it imitation of BIG, then BIG is the imitation of archigram. dude i think this presentation suit the nature of this project well.

" ...and so begins the decade long imitations of BIG."

I know these designers personally and I assure you they did not look to BIG (nor should anyone else) or other half baked OMA rip offs for inspiration. This is a genuine derivation of the energy found in comics and the playfulness of their representations. Nice work guys.
M Moran   01.24.11
Actually, the presentation was in reference back to the comic pop art of Roy Lichtenstein and as M Moran mentioned a derivation of the energy, imagery, intensity and playfulness found in comics and other cartoon arts.

And yes Bjarke Ingels has stated to have been heavily influence and involved in comic and graphic novel imagery, but we neither looked to or took from the stylings of Archigram nor BIG, especially if you look past the graphics to the architecture we are far from either.
N   01.24.11
Yeah, N, to be more accurate it would be '...and so begins the decade long imitations of H&deM and Morphosis' Ha, just kidding, I still love it.

Way to go Reid. Cal Poly for the win.

"Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from - it’s where you take them to."

What is BIG? I googled it - do you mean Bjarke Ingels Group?

Amazing visuals!

BIG is yes Bjarke Ingels Group

This is an abomination, clearly created by people who don't understand the medium. Roy Lichtenstein continues to dominate and destroy the wonderful world of words and pictures.
