brooklyn-based studio interboro partners (tobias armborst, daniel d'oca, georgeen theodore)
has won MoMA PS1's 2011 young architects program with their design, 'holding pattern'.
the annual competition calls for projects that challenge the concept of installation,
granting one team to transform the outdoor courtyard space of the MoMA PS1 in new york city.

entry
aiming to reveal the courtyard and its potential rather than redesign it, the design takes note of
the unusual site conditions by working with its pre-existing qualities. the plot, which is an irregular
seven-sided polygon, directly determined the form of the installation: rope is strung from holes
in MoMA PS1's concrete wall to the parapet across the courtyard, creating a delicate fabric over
the outdoor space. inexpensive and column-free, the hyperboloid surface dramatically bends
around and over the courtyard to gently filter the sunlight.

the project is also the result of an extensive study taken of the local neighborhood.
responding to the collective wants and needs of the area's residents, 'holding pattern' is
a practice in recycling, offering a plan for the installation after its use. objects ranging from
benches to ping-pong tables, mirrors to floor lights will be donated after being in use in
the courtyard during the summer.
