apollo architects and associates has completed 'lift', a single family home located in the
residential district of downtown sendai, japan. characterized by seamless geometric volumes
and an impenetrable facade, the design features a protruding upper floor and a plan that centers
around an internal courtyard.

parking for two cars in located under the cantilevered structure

conceived as a single, continuous space filled with natural light, the second floor - housing the
principal living spaces - provides unobstructed sight-lines that open on to a private terrace.
located between the front facade and the residence, the deck creates a transitional atmosphere
between the two environments. dark louvers on the slanted facade act as a shield to the residence,
providing views outwards but not in. light and cross ventilation that filter through the wooden
slats penetrate the home, reducing the amount of windows required on walls that face neighboring
structures.

a central courtyard separates private and public functions of each floor. opening onto the sky,
the cubic volume contains maple trees and other vegetation that aim to create a tranquility
within the urban residence. using natural materials such as wood and tatami mats, the home
focuses on elements borrowed from the introduced landscape.

bedrooms and other small rooms compose the ground floor, breaking the long and narrow space
into a series of private and enclosed environments.

Location, location ,ocation. If you lived in that neighborhood would you want this nextdoor? Conversely if this were your house would you want to be in this neighborhood?

just terrible.....
c   03.02.11
mmm... some haters here.

@ d.barber : that's snobbery, straight or inverted.
@ jah : straight snobbery with a touch of envy.
@c sure, personal opinions are fine

I love it

You have to learn alot about japanese architecture, if you really criticizing the lack of genius loci. in the japanese architectural culture is the location unimportant.
Rosengold   03.02.11
Rosengold,
It is rather very important at local area. but not in a big city such as Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka etc.
Japanese architects haven't educated about the importance of site/area/location when they were students. I think it's very pity.

the design of house itself is nice.
but yeah, as you guys said, it looks they don care about the neighbor at all...
there are many architectures which is Cool Design but "Don Care Neighbors" in Japan.
so sad. im ashamed of them.

btw, Apollo does good design in other architectures, maybe they care about neighbors in other cases. but this case...

In case of neighbour go what you all above people think about louvre in paris ....
ashish   03.03.11
Maybe I should clarify my position -

I'm a fan of provocative architecture (and doing things differently) but I feel this building is just low quality in design terms - poorly resolved conceptually and poorly detailed - especially in areas such as the integration of services, the structural connections, the use of light, the internal spaces etc. etc....

It seems as if the designer has just not given this project enough time and consideration....
c   03.03.11
hey there are lovely details in this building, espacially the nice air condition position!
Rosengold   03.04.11
Nice house to have when you have uninformed critics, ugly power lines, ugly neighbours with ugly houses and cute cars.
Fortunate choice of an architect; enjoy the serene interior and blue sky
