austrian studio, franz architekten along with atelier mauch gmbh has designed
'fk austria wien training academy', a sports facility located in vienna, austria.
housing academy training grounds for one of the most traditional football clubs
in the country, the design includes indoor practice halls and three grass pitches.
a tight construction budget and deadline along with local building codes dictated the
overall design which is straddled over a slopping landscape. restricted to a maximum
height of 4.5 meters, the facility is composed of a single volume that is partially
submerged into the ground.

playing field and gallery
a cantilevered roof - used in areas as a viewing deck for coaches and visitors - extends
beyond the footprint of the two-storey structure, providing a weather resistance perimeter
for entrances and terraces.

impact resistant plywood lines the walls of the playing field
inside, a double height training hall forms the heart of the building with a series of compact
secondary programs such as fitness rooms, massage and storage rooms and a cafeteria, lining
the exterior walls. an open access corridor on the main floor works like a gallery to the sunken
playing field, spotlighting the sport taking place within the naturally illuminated space.

windows that span the exterior wall fill the space with natural light
artificial grass ad birch plywood provide a neutral platform free from distraction. carried throughout
circulation spaces and zones that lead players to the field, the artificial turf operates as both a
way-finding tool and a pre-game buffer areas.
