'puu-bo' by internationally renowned firm BIG is the first-prizing winning design of
the international e2 (economy + ecology) timber competition in finland. a collaborative effort
with pirmin jung engineers for wood constructions, AOA anttinen oiva architects ltd., vahanen engineers
and stora enso, the 15,000 m2 housing project in kouvola is developed for maximum flexibility,
embracing as many building typologies and functionalities as possible. being of wooden construction,
the system aims to be sustainable in both its construction and consumption.

located adjacent to the water, the serpentine form defines and divides the plot into parks,
parking and public, social spaces. reaching a maximum height of eight storeys, each unit
is orientated to provide a unique view of the landscape.

rather than pinning the design around a single-time market study, the project is developed
to evolve over time, ultimately being driven by new sustainable methods which enable it
to remain competitive with other building systems. applicable to a number of functional needs,
markets, building codes, and energy demands, 'puu-bo' works with the available resources in
the finnish market for better performance and the generation of qualitative spaces for the masses.

history will let us understand our folly: how "method" could masquerade as architecture. we don't need architects anymore. just invent a program to design.
kurosheep   03.16.11
yeah, kurosheep, i will tweet your comment... totally agree :)

(we have already many programs to design)
@huyuk   03.16.11
this owes a great deal of its resonance to Moshe Safdie

Love that they used the cover of "The freewheelin' Bob Dylan", for the winter picture...

Sorry but nothing realy new here ! It looks like a replica of HABITAT 67 constructed for EXPO 67 in Montréal. And I prefer the original !

Jean-Pierre Pérusse   03.16.11
Um, rip off of "Habitat" from the Montreal Expo 67.

Opps, Jean-Pierre beat me to it!
Beast   03.16.11
Moshe Safdie, meet Alvar Aalto (and while we're at it, lets say hi to Richard Mier as well)

that said, I really like this

"the generation of qualitative spaces for the masses"

rhetoric alert!
rhetoric alert!
jurist   03.16.11
It lacks the spatial complexity of '67.

I agree dbkii, I'd say it's Baker House meets Tietgenkollegiet

nice typology succesfully tested 40 years ago in the peripery of Paris. Emile Aillaud was the architect:

Why is it so important to show the "process" or "method" for BIG?

I miss subtle and mystique architecture these days...
ROMANTICIST   03.20.11
I think they show this method/process to let more easy the understanding of their project and if they can make so simple the process explanation, they feel to be right.
Meanwhile, the project looks like nothing more than an exercise
